My thoughts exactly. Steelies look GREAT on the long hoods. I'd go with 205/50s for a little extra acceleration.

Bling and butcher ? Haven't seen a single post above that does that... Wheels are bolt on, stickers are stick-on, the rest of the ideas were gearing towards stock or period correct mods...

About Bob Tilton's ride, which looks very fine by the way. I think I don't like the black trim on the windshield much. Wouldn't it be better in chrome, like the side windows???

Every time I see Bob's car, I just want to go home and dump $20K into my '86 and make it look like a vintage long hood. His is the only car that does that to me.

absolutely

avoid the minilites - they are not as good as Fuchs -- just get the Fuchs done in a frosted finish

rub the paint out -- with Meguiar's red bottle or whatever you are comfy with using a random orbit buffer

fix the brakes and suspension!

flush the brake fluid and put new rubber hoses on

replace all rubber in the suspension with new or with polybronze

that will keep you busy for a while

I like the looks of the old front; but the S "spoiler" works better...

generally, avoid bodywork until last - it does not make the car go faster (except aero mods)

I agree fuchs are better wheels. But IMO steelies look better on certain cars. I also doubt he would spend more. He could prob sell the fuchs for less than he could buy steelies.

ok, you are advising him to sell the better performing wheels to buy ones that are purely cosmetic

- in that case, why own a Porsche at all?

the car is all about performance -- that is my bias

Ok great, I appreciate the suggestions.

This weekend we're going to dive in and start cleaning it up:
- remove the trim
- buff out the paint
- maybe upgrade to SC t-bars if we can find them cheap enough
- brakes, lines, fluid
- new suspension and engine/trans bushings
- adjust ride height
- new seats if we can get them soon enough
- new sound deadening in the rear shelf / trans tunnel

Eventually we'll probably
- polish the wheel paddles
- H4's, turn signal lenses
- mirrors
- vinyl porsche graphics
- RS carpet kit
- Momo Mod7 wheel

etc etc etc

I thought performance was not high on the 912 priority list. Same looks, (relatively) poor performance

Not picking a fight...just a couple legitimate questions (at least in my mind):

If steelies are so inferior, why do I see them on some vintage race 912's?

Will steelies really perform that much WORSE than Fuchs even if they are inferior?

I think the issue is that the wheels on the car now are 16's so the first point was to get to a period correct 15", then the question of which wheel becomes one of style choice and cost.

Randy is correct that a lighter wheel will yield improved performance. It will accelerate quicker, brake better and handle better. This can be proved on the racetrack with quicker laptimes.

Style is about personal preference.

of course, the issue is more complicated...

b/c we want good rubber for performance, right?

but going to ANY 15" wheels to be period correct means you have a hard time finding high performance tires -- esp. since the beloved S03's are NLA in 15"

anyway, the owner has to take their best shot in whatever direction they choose

troll the 914 boards for a mildly built 2.0+ liter type IV and drop it in.

Someone recently sold a ~120hp t4 for $1500. What does it cost to get similar perf (TORQUE) out of a typ 616?

No problem getting nice rubber in 205/50 15.

Pretty much agree on tb912 and kenik's posts BUT for polishing out the paint. i'd leave it for a while.

On suspension i'd go new rubber bushings all around and i'd look for turbo torsion bars and whatever brakes you can get for cheap (would SC calipers fit?)

Then align, corner balance and make sure the motor is up to spec.

ABSOLUTELY no ducktail. and i'm not sure i'd do the side tape....maybe just front and rear. H4's are expensive and don't make the car any faster so i'd put that lower on the list.

Man i'd love to have one of those sitting around.....

i'd say with an older Porsche it's not about getting to 60mph but rather keeping it there when the road gets curvy

True, but for a true sports-car I would say it's about getting to 60 (and further) AND keeping it there on curvy roads.
The 912 was never meant to be a fast sports-car like the 911 was. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate a nice 912 though.

Did you guys see the feature on R gruppe in 911&Porsche world?? Bob Tilton's car is in it.
