1984 911 AC Recharge
Had my 1984 911's AC system serviced today. New hoses, receiver drier, and a new shot of 134 - now putting out 50 degs at the vents on a 90 deg day - does it get any better?

I would think a stock system should do a little better than that... You're not going to get too much more. Your evaporator might be plugged up with debris so you're not getting good air flow through the fins of the evaporator. Did you have a good shop make the change over from the R12 to the R134? If this wasn't done correctly you might be losing some temp there.
What kind of cooling were you expecting? I'm sure you're aware with after market modifications that are now available you can achieve much lower temperatures if you're willing to either do some work and or spend some money. You can do a search here to find tons of information on cooling the Porsche... Here's an A/C Tech Article on an "84": http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_ac_1984/911_ac_1984.htm

Performance Porsche in Durham/Chapel Hill, NC did the conversion for a previous owner a few years ago and by all accounts is a good shop. I had some wear in the hoses and only 3oz of 134 in the system. Sport Auto of Summerfield (Lamborghini Carolinas) did the AC recharge and has a good rep as well. I haven't checked the evaporator - where is it located? Also, would I use blown air to clean it?

Your evaporator is in the "smugglers box" which is beneath a trap door on the floor of your trunk. However, the evaporator is inside the plastic box which you can't get at without evacuating your A/C system and removing the box which contains both the evaporator and the evaporator blower. At that point you might as well do an upgrade on both the evaporator and blower motor which Pelican Parts carries. By doing this you'll reduce your A/C temp by 10 degrees with those changes and possibly some others.
If you'll open the link shown above you'll see pictures of the smuggler's box, evaporator, and the blower motor. This might be a good time to introduce yourself and your car with pictures by starting a new thread if you haven't already done so.

When I did my A/C upgrade I replaced my evaporator. This is a picture of the bottom of my factory original evaporator, and why I needed to replace it.
