Blinker indidcator lights

79sc

I have a problem with the left and right flasher indicaters that are located on one of the gauges.(tach)? They both blink when the left or right blinker is on.

Just kind of annoying. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Justin

Typically, the blinking of both arrows at the same time is due to poor grounding. Check that all grounds to the instrument (brown wires) have clean connections and are firmly attached. Check, also, that the flasher relay's contacts are clean and the relay is firmly seated in the socket. There may be other causes, but checking the grounds is where to start.

Justin,

When did this issue surface?

Were you working on the vehicle?

Are all of the chasis bulbs lighting up when you use your turn signal
as they would if your emergency flasher was activated.

A bad ground/connection is a good starting point.

As per the previous post, try cleaning all of the relay connectors.

Here are a couple of jpegs from my factory manual.

These are for our '86 which may/or not be compatible
with your model year.

If not you may want to pick up a Bentley Manual.

Good luck,

Gerry

Justin

Here's another jpeg with the relay location for our '86.

Good luck,

Gerry

I will pull the tach out the tonight and check out the grounds. My tach is kind of jumpy also. It always levels off and read good but it kind a bounces around before it settles into place. Might take care of both issues if it is a grounding problem.

Thanks for the help
Justin

I had a similar problem. In my thread, several suggestions were the grounds and wiring, the relay contacts, the fuse and the switch.

Ossieblue changed his fuse and all was well.

Someone else cleaned the contacts on the switch w/ success. Othere have posted pocedures on bending the contacts into their former correct positions.

Mine does it only when the left turn is indicated. I'll be checking my switch this weekend.

The first indication I had that my alternator was not functioning properly was weird behavior of the turn indicator lights - on the gauge, not the actual lights (they worked just fine). My alt was not charging, so battery voltage was about 12 VDC or less when running. Once I replaced the alt, the turn indicators worked perfect. You might want to put a volt meter on your battery while the car is running. It should indicate somewhere between 13 and 14 VDC.

I pulled everything apart last night and could not find it. The turn signal switch itself looks like it just came out of the box. The PO must have replaced it. I checked that out and everything seemed fine. I found the grounds everything looked good. Grabbed ahold of the relay and wiggled it around and checked the connections. I was a litttle leary of pulling it out due to the fact the fact that the signals themselves work just fine. Does it just pull out? I did find a few burnt bulbs while I was into the gauges. ANy other thoughts whilst I have all the gauges out?

Thanks
Justin

When I replaced a faulty turn signal relay with one from NAPA, the replacement relay caused both indicator lights in the dash to operate simultaneously.

That may be it. The relay is a pretty shiny blue color. It looked odd behind other black relays it was next to. I will look for a OEM relay and try it out.

Thanks
Justin

The original relay is black. Looks like you may have identified the cause. Can you borrow a relay from another local Pelican to try?

for $54(from our host) I can see why he decided to go napa with it. I may be able to wait for X-mas to get this one fixed..... All I want for X-mas is a turn signal ralay! I have a few freinds who have the same year cars. I will see if I can talk one of them into letting me pull a few gauges out of the car. Does it just pull straight up? THen just unplug it?

Thanks
Justin

Yeah, the relay just pulls straight up though it may be a little snug. It is possible to access the relay from the front without pulling gauges but it's a bit of a struggle. If your car has a vacuum brake booster (mine doesn't), then maybe it's not possible due to the location of the MC/booster.

Justin,

In my previous post (7-30-2009) which included
a wiring schematic of our '86, there is a diode
at the top of the page, P/N 911 617 108 00,
which is connected to both our light and
turn signal switch.

I do recall having to replace this diode many years
ago, but not the exact reason, although it had
something to do with our turn signals.

I'm not aware why it is included in the circuit,
or if one is shown in your model/year wiring diagram.

On our '86, the diode is mounted on a small PC board
1/2" X 2", located in back of the dash bottom lip,
and just under the tach/speedo area.

Good luck,

Gerry

I picked up a used relay plugged it in and all is good. Thanks to all who have helped. Another issue put to rest.
