Question Wheel/Tire Question

When I bought my 86 cab last month the wheels that came with it are from a newer 911 model. The tires are (Front) 205/55/ZR 16 and (Rear) 225/50/ZR 16.
Is this the right setup for my weekend/daily driver?

it's not the factory setup but it obviously works. You have spacers/adapters to compensate for the postive offset of the wheels. Also, your tires don't match but that's another thread in itself.

I think the wheels look good but Fuchs were "correct". Most likely 16 inch, 6 inches front, 7 inches rear.

There are spacers indeed.
What about your comment that my tires don't match? Is this something I should correct? I think I need a new set of shoes for the cab so I want to make sure I get the correct size (s).

The sizes are fine but the brands of tire should be the same. Just purchase 4 tires of the same brand and you'll be good.

Sometimes, 911's respond badly to mixed brand/speed rating tires.

Before buying new tires, do a search here for lots of info and brands and what would suit your driving style/needs.

Porsche Crest

Thanks!

What tires are of most of you using, and what type or driving (DD, rallyes, track, etc...) ?

Is this what the car came with, or did you "upgrade"?

Check out these threads for that info. Tires and what's best seems to get discussed weekly.

Thanks Wayne. The link does not work but I did a search and found New Tires for 1988 911 Targa
Quite a bit of reading and I am catching up on things.

Nothing wrong with what you have if you like it. It looks ok to me.

As noted 16" Fuchs 6 or 7 front and 7 or 8 rear w 205/225 is a blue chip set up. There are some very good tire choices in those sizes. ( I love the Dunlop Star Spec for value and a broad use.)

Just a thought, there are some decent Fuchs replicas out in 17" size. This gives better and larger tire options if you are interested in going fast. It will make your ride a little stiffer with the shorter sidewall.

MY .02 CENTS
kumo does make a good tire, thats what i run on my 80 kumo ast i think ran a little over 500 for the four at americas w/ road hazzard etc... also run them on my s-sons 5.0 mustang they hold up to curb hits fairly wheel also(his car not mine)
i think thats what you have on the front , its hard to tell but the tread looks like it.

zippi_gg,
the tyre setup you have now is perfect, if you have 8's in the back you can even go with
245-45-16 but there is not many manufacturers making them, so it's really expensive.
if you are driving in hot climate kumho are not bad, but I run pirelli p7 with the same size and they are perfect all rounder, not too soft but they stick well in the wet and dry, they offten have deals on those, so you can pick up a set for a decent price.

good luck and don't hesitate to pay a little extra for a decent brand, tyres are very important especially on a 911......

The wheels on your car appear to be "Cup" or "CupII" type wheels from the 964 or 993 type
Porsche.

Our '86 3.2 was factory equipped with the 6"F 7"R Fuchs wheels which we upgraded to
7"F & 8"R.

Over 30 years, we have used Pirelli tires exclusively on all of our 911's and 930
primarily for the low wear index.

However, as you may surmise, the choice of tires brand on any car is very subjective.

Our most current installation are the Pirelli P-Zero Nero of the same size as on your car.

245's on the rear wheels might cause some interference with the inner wheel well
and does not provide any meaningful performance enhancement.

Nice car, just keep an eye on those oil temps.

Good luck,

Gerry

Someone is offering me a great deal on 4 virtually new rims and Falken tires that came off a 98 993 model.
The sizes are F-215/40/17 and R-255/40/17.
Is this something I should consider, and will it fit my car?

Zippy_gg,

What size are the rims?

We have 7"F & 8"R rims on our '86, with 205/55 (F),
and 225/50 (R) Pirelli Zero Nero tires.

Our configuration is OK, with some very minor inside
body rubbing on the front.

Your proposed size(s) most probably exceeds
the fender well dimensions.

Your may want to try a test mount/drive & turn radius.

Good luck,

Gerry

yes, those 993 wheels will fit your car, with the spacers you already have installed.

If you can measure the spacers and let us know the width in mm, we can be 100% on the fit.

Mine needed 1 inch front and 2.50 inch rear to fit my Cup wheels.

The Cup wheels WERE 16 inch, 7's in front., 9's in rear. I have since gone back to the factory setup of 7 and 8 inch Fuch style wheels. 205/55 and 245/45

BTW-I used Boothe adapters to correct the offset of the cup wheels.
