Sunroof Liner

I've read all the posts... and this is still not clear to me:

Do the edges of the sunroof vinyl liner run in the side channel of the cable channel? Or between the top of the cable channel and the sunroof?

I'm having difficulty...

thanks,
Jim

I have the same problem and ruined mine trying. Now it is "topless". The liner that is...As far as I know it runs between the rails and the roof needs to be off to put it back on. Pain in the butt.

Jim,

go to the Tech Info Center on this site and scroll down to the Miscellanous section and you will find the step-by-step instructions on how to install the sunroof liners.

I believe those instructions are right out of Waynes book "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911". And take it from me, it won't hurt to order 2 sets of liners. I replaced mine a while ago and it's very hard to get it looking like a factory installation. I simply did not take my time on this project and it came out a little crooked.

Hope this helps

Thanks Tim - but I've completed everything but the reassembly of the liner back on to the sunroof.

I've made a lot of reference to wayne's step-by-step and other's as well...but no one is clear on my question. They all say 'slide the liner' back, or 'slide the liner' out...but never say if the liner is in the side groove or on top of the rails. I'm thinking in the groove.

A picture of your car highlighting the specific area in question might help.

I've redone my sunroof, but it is not clear to me from the written description what you are talkng about.

OK - here's an edge on view of the channel - that the wide groove on top of the channel has the rear sunroof bracket/cables run; on this side groove the only thing that clearly goes in it is the front sunroof bracket which 'spans' one edge of the groove.

So, this is the side groove (both sides) I'm thinking the sunroof liner slides up and back on (or not?).

This may not help much but I recently had my sunroof replaced when the car was painted - the windows were out, etc. but the sunroof was in. I took it to a little mom & pop upholstery place and I know for a fact that they did not remove the sunroof to replace the headliner. I only mention it because David 84 911 said you have to remove the sunroof and I don't think that's the case. Good luck with this. Its why I didn't attempt the job myself. The little shop did it in a full day for only $160! The headliner was an Autos International piece from their booth at last Fall's German Autofest in Ventura.

The answer is yes, it goes into the slot! I wrestled with this dilema a couple of months ago, and got it reinstalled. I couldn't remember how I did it, so I just went out and looked at my car, and now I remember! The panel is only attached with clips in the front, and sort of floats in the rear. The slot guides the panel when you close it. I remember I tried it the other way and no go! It is easiest to put in with the roof out. Good luck!

Thanks, Grant. The floating in the rear is actually my problem. The liner is correctly in the slot, but the "float" causes a metallic rattle over bumps. Now that I know it's in there the right way, I'll dig for a solution.
