+1. Once you've a good ground point, you've a reference when measuring the voltage potential against other grounds (helpful locating grounds that are suspect (in fact, not quite "at ground", at all).

Long lead set, as Sal noted. Doesn't get any better than the negative post of the battery as your reference.

All right, found the problem with the test light trick. It was a loose wire coming out of the fuse panel. I am a happy camper now. Thanks again guys.
