Transmission nightmare
![]() This is my nightmare, 1970 911E, someone botched up the hole for the pivot ball and just made a new one!!, now it's broke again and it doesn't look like there's enough meat to re-thread, does anyone know if this can be welded? or any other ideas? thanks, hope the pictures post, Rick. |

I have a really nice 911/01 transaxle case for $150 if you decide to replace the case. The labor to swap components might even be less then a weld up / timecert repair to your case.
Regards, Andrew M

Not only is it botched up but they seem to have repositioned the pivot as if it were for a 215 mm ‘push-type’ clutch.
I would take Andrew’s offer. That said, it is not a simple ‘bolt-in’ operation to change the main casting. You will need to carefully measure the existing ring & pinion settings and pattern and repeat those with the new casting. Before going farther, I recommend you pull the gear cluster from the transmission (measuring the shim gaskets) and inspect all the parts. It may be better to start with another complete transmission. What is the condition of the side cover clutch Bowden tube support ring? Now for a suitable but inexpensive ‘fix’. You can make a small ‘plate’ (alu or steel) that fits inside the differential area and has a threaded protrusion filling the hole. Epoxy it on the inside. There is reasonable clearance to the ring gear if you pay attention. Inspecting an original 2.2, you will find a threaded insert for the pivot pressed in from the differential side. Let the epoxy fill the other pivot hole. Best, Grady

As for repairing the case in question? As has been suggested it's likely cheaper to grab another case in good condition and just move your internals over to a different bellhousing.
