No Brake Lights, 1987 911

Someone following me honked and pointed out that I have no brake lights on my 87 911. The previous owner mentioned that he broke off the third brake light when removing the car cover. The wires for it are coiled up under the deck lid.

Do I need the third brake light to be wired in series to make the other two brake lights work or should I look elsewhere? The fuse looks good.

I doubt that they are connect with series method, unless it's created an electrical short. I think your brake switches are gone, common problem.
Do a search on this site with "brake light", "BLSAS", or "brake light switch", you'll find the common issue, test, and replacement if needed.

I'm about to install the 3rd brake light on mt 87 cabriolet, but I cannot find where the wire used to be. Can you give me a hint or a pic? I thought if it came to worse I could just run a wire to one of the lights down below, but I would rather have it done properly Thanks Philip

Philip,

I am away from the car for the night, but I'll try to take a look at it tomorrow and get back to you.

I know there shouldn't be an issue running without the third brake light, but...

I had left mine off after installing the carrera tail and had problems with my brake lights not illuminating. I'd tucked the wiring away and capped the end of the wire to the third light. I installed the brake light and now the brakes work perfectly.

Hey Woody,

Before you throw money at the issue. Check all fuses, voltage of lead and grounds.

If you lights turn on when you press all the way down, then it is most likely the BLS's

+1 on tape off and insulate any exposed wires from the broken off 3rd light.

Draco,

I appreciate your suggestions, especially since I just spent the last hour reading all about your SLSAS.

I've checked the fuse, athough I'll go back and make sure that all connections are tight and clean and that I have good grounds.

After all the reading (many, many more threads than just this one), I still think I'll be adding two new switches and an SLSAS, just to be safe.
