Ticking sound in engine

My 77 2.7 has a ticking sound coming from the right side of the engine when started cold. It goes away when the RPMs go up or once the engine is warm. I adjusted the valves this winter when the engine was out (first time). I am thinking it is just the pressure fed tensioners that I installed, but would like more opinions.

My 2.7 had notoriously loud valve lash. Now I have a 3.2. Check the valve lash on that side again. Maybe use a ong screwdriver to determine if the tick is on intakes or exhaust. Be on the look out for snappe head-studs (I never had this problem though...).

2.7's always had this problem. That is why '74 -'77 911 are hard to sell. Could be an exhaust leak or a head stud has pulled away from the case.( stripped )
Torque your heads to find out. This can be done with the engine in the car.

.............When the engine was out did you replace the head studs with Raceware studs? Should have.
Stripped head studs are a common occurance on 74-77 911's.

While it is certainly possible taht this engine has a pulled head stud, I'd strongly recommend getting everything in adjustment before I do anything else. I have taken my valve covers off three times in the last six weeks (I do have a broken head stud) and with each bit of attention the valves have gotten quieter.

A long screwdriver placed against the running engine in various locations, with the other end against your ear, can pinpoint the noise. Be very careful around an engine that is running. Just opening the hood and moving yoru head around should tell you whether the noise is on the intake side or the exhaust side.

I believe it is a valve that is out of adjustment. If not, my next guess is worn valve guides.

Thanks everyone I will try the screwdriver trick. I know it is on the passenger side. Now just have to find out intake or exhaust.

Mark sorry I didn't replace the studs, can't afford it right now. But I did check them all and they were tight.

Hi Shawn, I had a ticking coming from one exhaust valve. I located it with a steel bar (to the ear), then pulled that cover to examine the rockers and guides. Turned out the valve guide is pretty worn (can wiggle the valve stem back and forth.

Once you have isolated the source of the noise then it doesn't hurt to have a look. The valve cover comes off in minutes.
