Porsche Crest Fuchs - The meaning of the "J"

Does anyone know what the meaning of the letter J is in the sizing stamped into the back of the wheel (e.g. 6Jx16 and 7Jx16)?

Also, do I need spacers if these are the original wheels?

My 1982 SC has a set of 1994 Shark Fin rims on at the moment with rather deep spacers.

Any help of insight would be appreciated.

rim edge "style" - it has to do with how the tire bead is handled. Basically, the lip is curled over forming an inverted J. This style takes a standard tire.

Basically 6Jx16 and 7Jx16 are 6" & 7" wide wheels in 16" diameter with the J style rim lip.

I'm running 6J & 7Jx16s Fuchs with 205/55 and 225/50 front/rear - this seems to be one of the standard SC tire setups around here. I'm not currently running spacers, but I'm debating getting some small ones to fill out the rear a bit more as I have a bit of room in the back.

Hi Mike,

The "J" in the rim designation identifies the shape of the tyre outer bead profile. This is where the tyres' outer bead contacts the outer profile of the rim.

Sorry, unable to help with your other queries, but hope this helps.

Cheers,
Steve

The Fuchs you mention were standard on an SC.

I believe that you have to have (1" front and 2" rear?) spacers to fit the Shark Fin wheels on an SC.
If you have the spacers, you'll have to remove them to install the Fuchs.

The spacers currently behind the Shark Fins are roughly 4" wide. I have not measured them but they are certainly more than 1-2".

I just bought the car and would like to go back to the original rims. Howver, it looks like the original rims would sit well inside the wheel wells if there are no spacers at all.

I had planned to put 205/55 and 225/50 tires on the 16's but just wondered what size spacer most people typically run with this set up?

J, JJ, K, JK, B, P and D are Tyre bead profiles / rim contour designations. Common wisdom has it that the letter represents the shape. ie. "J" means the bead profile is the shape of the letter "J". Not so, although "J" is the most common profile identifier. There are 64 highly technical pages defining the shape and dimensions of each profile(not light reading)

H, H2, FH, CH, EH and EH2 are Hump profiles.

If you ar ereally interested ETRTO is the governing body that can provide the details

your car came w/ 6"ET36 front & 7"ET23.3 rear, no spacers.

you can also use the following oems on the front w/ no spacers in either 15" or 16"
7" ET23.3, 8" ET23.3

and the following in back
8" ET10.6, 9" ET15

I've seen 245/275, but for most folks 235/255 is about as wide as they want to deal w/. If you stay w/ 205/245 there almost no issues
