Just got my Hagerty insurance renewal which has an interesting new exlusion...
Exlusion:
"Loss to your covered auto as a result of anyone causing you to voluntarily part with it as a result of a trick or scheme." Is that broad or what? I guess now it's only covered if the crooks steal it using some 'honest' method like carjacking. ![]()

It's probably against Nigerian scams...
And as a reminder, since that was news to me, I recently got in writing from them that you ARE covered for occasional trips to work (which I thought was excluded explicitely). Occasional being the operative word ! I like Hagerty ! |

it's just simple insurance underwriting, excluding losses by scammers / crooks. I was scammed by FastClassice, SFbay area, have written workorder for work to be done, paid for the work to be done, when i finally gave up on the leaking, no oil pressure POS engine & Took it apart, I was rewarded with proof of the BS work, oil seal missing, oil bypass not done ( but paid for ), miss matched / worn out parts. My 100,000. heads that sat for 24 years, you ask? The dude used some stupid Dremel grinder and then installed them, same valves / springs bla, bla.
So the insurance Copanys are smart, they see the trend and blocked the contract. It's up to us to weed out the BS / Crap / Un-human dickheads. I've given my rip off story to a couple of CHP investigators I know they were official as I called their CHP office in the 707 area code. |

So you pull up in front of a restaurant and hand the keys to a guy dressed up like a valet. Only to find out later he wasn't. Do they pay up?
Another one: You pull over to help a motorist in distress. While you're out of the car, two guys jump out of the bushes into your car and take off in it. The "distressed" vehicle also bolts, leaving you standing by the side of the road. Do they pay up?

Your first scenario was exactly the thing I thought of, POP. Similar to if you were selling your car and allow a potential buyer to test drive it and he bolts.

I would think that unless you voluntarily sign the title over, you haven't really "parted" with the car. But I'd want to hear it from them. I'm sticking with State Farm.

One is a heist without a gun, the other is with a gun... What is the difference? Next they'll exclude car theft in any location other than your locked garage.
I'm sure all of this can be explained...

I'd definitely ask them for a definition...and examples.

It is a "duping" clause. Car dealers have it in their policies, too. Basically, it says if you get fooled/taken/scammed, they ain't covering it.

Knew a guy in Germany...a sports doctor living down by Garmisch who lost his Porsche to a guy he was demonstrating it to as a possible sale. They were out in the country side and Doctor guy stops to swap seats and let the other guy drive...boom, he's gone leaving to Doc standing beside the road. His German insurance company refused to cover the loss because he "handed" the car over to the thief. This was in the early 90's...

A "typical" scenario is identity theft. A customer comes in, claims to be "Jerry Springer," has a fake driver's license, etc., signs up to lease a car and drives it away with no money down. When they contact the real Jerry Springer in the second month after no payment is made on the lease, he has no idea what happened. And the car is gone. Most major car dealers pay extra or negotiate to have that exclusion taken out, though. |
