Rota Fox vs. Jeff Alton

Looking for the best set of 17 inch fuchs. I am just curious what the differences that each wheel manufacturer has to offer. Any thoughts?

Rota Fox are cast

Jeff Alton's wheels are forged three piece

If you are looking for the best then Jeff's wheels are your answer.

For the best 17" Fuchs would be Jeff's wheels. They are forged aluminum giving then the most strength at the lightest weight. I believe that they are around $2900 for a set for these gorgeous bad boys.

The Rota Fox is a cast wheel that is heavier and supposedly not as strong but passed the necessary test for certification These are about 4-5 lbs. heavier than Jeff's. These have been used at the track and have had no issues. Cost on these I beleive are $1199 to 1599 depending on finish.

I would consider Jeff's to be a better product and are priced accordingly and I would own a set if they were in my price range.
I do own a set of the Rota's and am very satisfied with them.

I love my Rotas. But they are cast, and forged is better. Best Product, money no object? Jeff Alton for sure(having never seen them in person). Money is an object? Rotas look great and perform for less money.

Third options KC is someone like TruDesign wheels. Takes the center area, pedals, from an original Fuch and welds it to an aluminum hoop. Priced about in between the two.

The easy answer is Jeff's wheels.

The centers are new - forged billets that are machined down. They are three piece - so if you bend a lip, you can replace just that piece. If you want to change offsets or add width, you can do that too.

New will always trump old when you are talking metal and "duty cycles" Jim at True Design and Mike Lindsey make great wheels - but they are still using old centers.

The Linea Corse are great wheels - but they are gravity cast - and gravity cast wheels will not be as strong or as light as forged wheels. I would not hesitate to use the linea corse wheels on a pure street 911. Good bang for the buck.

For people concerned about where the cash is going, does anyone know where these products are made? The Rota's are imported right (china)? What about Jeff Altons?

Rota's are made in the Philippines.

Jeff Alton's wheels are beautiful. It's not so easy to go from 16" to 17" and keep the look "right". Jeff's wheels look great. Much nicer than the Lindsey wheels, IMO.

I have Rota's on my car. I love them. They look great and are holding up well even after a lot of abuse at the track.

So nice to finally have choices!

Following up on the Rota tire size question above... I've just picked up a set of the Rotas for my SC (17 x 7.5 and 17 x 9). I'd be interested in hearing max tire size suggestions. My thought was to dedicate these for track use running slicks and keep my stock 6/7 Fuchs for the road. thanks

I am running Falken RT-615 225/45 on the front and 255/40 on the rear. The rears fit really well and the fronts are tight. I haven't rolled my fenders and only the front right will make slight contact in certain situations. These are known to be slightly oversize. I think you can go larger but not without modifications such as rolling the front fenders.

A look at how well the rears fit.

I have a set of TruDesign Wheels...8x17 and 9.5x17...I love them and for the money can't be beat...Jeff's wheels are stellar too, at the time when I purchased TDWs, Jeff's weren't in production yet...

I'm not sure I would use a cast wheel with slicks. Don't know if anyone running Rota's has that setup, but you are talking a lot more force going into the wheel than even with a R spec Track tire.

And of course the biggest advantage of Jeff's wheels are you can specify an exact offset if you are looking to squeeze the maximum wheel/tire onto your car.

Any opinions on the True Design and Lindsey approach vs Jeff Alton/Zuffenhause, i.e., old stock cores vs an entirely new wheel. All three are roughly the same cost at around $3,000, give or take.

I certainly understand the attraction to the Rotas at $1299. They are good looking wheels and fit right up. I'm working hard to explain to myself why I shouldn't go this route. I'll only be doing the occassional DE and Auto X after all . . .

It is great to have choices though.

I would not risk a welded wheel on my car. from what I've seen of zuffenhausen products they are right up there with WEVO and the factory. Cast wheels are HEAVY. RUF wheels are cast, heavy and expensive so price is not always the best indicator of quality.

IMHO, the fronts look goofy on a turbo as they sit too inboard. Here's my 79 930 with the front spacer. I had runout problems with 2 sets of Rotas and gave up. Got some FRH 3 piece wheels and had no problems. Changed them to Kinesis Supercups and sold the car. The FRH had the best offset for the fronts.

Guys, I appreciate the info!.

Does anyone have the weight differences between the Alton's, Lindseys P2, and the Rotas? (using 17x9 for comparison)

For someone like myself that stays strictly on the street it is tough not to go with the less expensive option. $2900 for a set of Altons or $1300 for the Fox's - that's a big $$ difference to save some extra pounds. I would probably be better off just losing 20lbs of my own fat arse.

That extra $1600 could be used elsewhere on the car.

On the other hand, nothing is practical about owning a Porsche, so I am still leaning towards the nicer, lighter, better quality, Alton's.
