Smart Racing Aluminum Crank Pulley?
Does anyone have a Smart Racing’s Aluminum Crank Pulley?
![]() I am guessing this pulley is used to reduce rotating mass on the engine. Does this make a big difference, how much weight is saved? At $45 it’s not a very large investment + it looks cool! After I removed my AC I always hate to see that extra pulley attached to the main crank pulley.

$45 is a deal considering what the factory single row (non A/C) pulley will cost you these days. ~ four yrs. ago I bought a new one from Porsche for around $70. And I thought that was ridiculous. Now Pelican says they cost $120-something!!!
![]() I think SR's main reason for offering it is to be able to use a distributorless ignition like Electromotive or Motec? Secondly is of course the removal of the unnecessary second row. I don't think you save all that much rotating mass (less mass never hurts though- except for clutch/flywheel stuff), but why have the extra row when you don't need it? If I needed one today, i'd definitely buy the SR pulley. Looks like a good deal to me! And I bet it makes your car faster, soley based on the racy looking anodized alloy finish......... ![]()

What engines is this for? On my 3.2L we found a single row pulley that fit.

Looks like his engine is a 3.2L (1987)
The factory pulleys seem to vary a little from earlier years to later years. Different part numbers, different diameters. Probably all are basically the same? Some may simply turn your fan faster or slower, depending on what size you end up with?

I thought I'd resurrect this thread... I have one of these %^%$#!! Smartracing pulleys, and guess what? It's not compatible with the stock upper pulley half and the stock 725mm belt. You have to use an older 911 ('65-'73) pulley half, and a 710mm belt. It looks like a 695-700mm belt would work with the stock pully half if you could find one but...
Anyone else run into this? JB

JB,
Are you referring to your '86 engine for this pulley? How I read your post is you're saying the '86 3.2 uses a 725mm belt. That's not correct. The proper spec. belt for the '86 3.2 is a 9.5 x 710 or a 9 x 710.

Right you are.... I guess what I was trying to say was that the Smartracing pulley with the stock pulley half and stock belt won't work - you need the stock belt and the early pulley half.... or the stock pulley half and an impossible to find 700mm belt.
It turned out to be MUCH easier just to get the old pulley half and the old style pulley wrench... Thx! JB
