Dansk Info

Hello:
89' Carrera 3.2 SW Chip SSI's. Need help determining the correct Dansk Muffler. What are the differences between the 70 mm and 84 mm 2 in 1 out mufflers. I can buy the 70mm for half the price of the 84 mm. Is there any advantage to the 84 mm. Am I on the right track?

Gus

The 84mm Dansk is the sporty, big sounding muffler and looks pretty cool. With the
2-in you will need straight heat exchangers, ie by-passing the little side muffler, the 3.2 normally has.

Stock tailpipe is 60mm, 70mm is "sport" and 84mm is also "sport", just larger diameter.

I got an official German TUV noise test certificate in the box of a Dansk 70mm "sports" 2 in 1 out I got recently, it said says 102 dB on a 2.7 car. An 84mm is a lot louder than a 70mm.

today i changed my 60mm to 84mm (2.4 on carbs). Its off my 3.2 which is waiting work, so i thought i would try it. It does seem a little smoother, but no real benefit in performance (maybe 1 or 2%).

In your case as its cheaper you might as well go for the 84, it dosent make it feel any worse, just no dramatic improvement, I was hoping for a sporty exhaust note, but it didnt really change, just a bit more burble at low revs. It might be on a 3.2 the effect is more pronounced.

for me, i'll give the 3.2 back its box as no real change, and keep hunting for a sporty box for my 2.4

What is the internal diameter of the two input tubes that would attach to the headers? I ask because the collector tubes on ssi's are 2inches id, but my 74 dual 70mm tip dansk sport muffle has an id slightly less than 2. I wonder of the 84mm sport muffler (that i understand to be for 75-89 cars) is larger.

Learn from my mistakes. Verify the parts number for each. 70mm come in 3 versions:
- for 73 and earlier cars
- for 74's
- for 75-89

They do not all cross-fit. The 74 will work on later cars if you cut/hit it with a hammer around the engine mount housing... Or if you use spacer flanges.

I am still trying to figure out the 84mm versions. Are they designed for later cars (but the extra relief means they fit everything?)

sorry i didnt measure it, and its allready fitted. IM running SSI's and all i can say was the 84 was a straight bolt in replacement for the 60mm, although in my case only a very slight improvement over my existing set up

There are more than the year to year variations.

For the standard mufflers

-73 = small indent in body of muffler and tail pipe exiting at a higher level with 2 inlets
74- = small indent in body of muffler and tail pipe angled lower to clear the impact bumpers with 2 inlets
75 - 89 larger indent in body of muffler (not needed for pre 3.2 but standardised and Ok on pre 3.2 cars), tail pipe for impact bumper clearance and with 1 inlet.

Dansk then does the above variations in "sport" with single, or dual, 70mm and 84mm tail pipes.

It also does a variation for the 75 - 89 cars with 2 inlets to fit cars backdated to SSIs. This version and the 74- version will both fit a pre 3.2 car with SSIs. I have just fitted a 74- 70mm type to my SC running SSIs.

So the 70mm comes in 4 versions:
- for 73 and earlier cars
- for 74's
- for 75-89
- for 75-89 running SSIs

There are some other variations with twin central tail pipes, tailpipes supplied lose and material (stainless/mild steel) and finish, but no need to complicate things more!

All SSI outlets (and primaries) are the same diameter, it is only the configurations of the flanges where they bolt to the heads that changes for the different engine fitments.

OK. Very helpful replies. My 3.2 has the metal tube next to muffler for the heater. I will need the Dansk muffler with the indent to fit properly. So can anyone help with the Dansk part number or model number that would fit my car configured with the SSI's. 70 or 84 mm. outlet.

Thanks

SSIs use a two inlet muffler.
With SSIs you won't need the indent because you'll lose the stock heat configuration. You must either backdate the forced air from the cooling shroud or come up with another way to feed air into the SSIs.

mark, very informative!

Did you do the ssi/70mm at the same time? or did you go ssi, then upgrade to the sporter 70mm at a later date. If you did the later, did you get a nice sporty box from 60 to 70? Im after a sporty box for my 2.4, going from 60 to 84 didnt work for me, so the next step is a 70mm.

Im just after a bit more exhaust note, not to fast car/max power, but you know what you i mean.

P.s im in the UK too =)

84mm Dansk

I bought a Dansk S/steel sport muffler 2 in 1 out with 84mm tail piece and I cut the tail piece off to position it properly and what I found was disappointing to say the least (see pic) What I actually got was a standard 60mm muffler with a 84 mm tailpiece
I am not sure if they are all like that or just mine to me it does not make sense to pay 238$ extra for a small piece of 84mm pipe.

Was the extra money due to it being stainless steel, or just for the large outlet pipe?
Many years ago I bought the standard Dansk sport. After a while I decided I really wanted the two out so added two pipes on my own. Those pipes are 75mm.

Mine was like that too. Huge end pipe and small id through muffler. What is the point?

The Dansk muffler polished stainless steel duel inlet standard 60mm single tail pipe is 822$

Muffler, (Sport) Polished Stainless Steel (2 In / 1 Out with 84 mm Tail Pipe) is 1060.25$

My idea was to fit it to a 3.6l MFI motor in a 1969 car without 2 tailpipes spoiling the classic looks .

So was I wrong to assume that the 84 mm unit that cost 238$ more than the standard 60mm unit would have internals to match.

I have asked the vendor to shed light on this still waiting for response .
