Post "S" front bumper on '70 - 911E

I'm thinking about putting an "S" front bumper on my 911. Any recommendations on who to buy it from and what is involved in the installation.

I'm in the process of doing the same. The price on the genuine metal S bumper from Porsche is $1350. Fiberglass repro's can be found from around $150. Installation looks pretty simple (famous last words).

I bought my S spoiler from Hank at
GT Racing. Great piece. However, this bumper is fiberglass and after one minor roll into
a telephone pole guy wire, mine took a
serious break along the bottom edge.
Do not expect too much of a bumper
role to be filled by fiberglass.

GT Racing is awesome. I'm in the preliminary planning stages of a project 71/72 911ST replica. I thought my main problem would be finding the correctly shaped front and rear flares, bumpers, etc. Then I found GT. They've got everything to make a 911ST, 911R, 911RS, 911RSR - it almost took the fun out of the planning

Red face

I once had a '70 911T I put a front fiberglass '72S stle bumper on. Worked great. Except one day, I was washing waxing, and a section of the bumper had gone "soft", like flexible rubber. The cause? Excess brake fluid exiting the factory bleed tube located behind the bumper. I took some aquarium airline tubing, extended the factory tube to exit UNDER the car, not on the second fibergalss bumper I bought & had painted. Words to the wise...brake fluid softens fiberglass!

Frankly, I don't see what looks so wrong with your "owiginal" bumper. LOVE the car's color BTW. But I'm a bit prejudiced in that area. Why did Porsche choose the name "irish green"? They sure as hell wouldn't call it "british racing green", would they? Uh, meant in the way of friendly criticism...but if your car were mine, I'd be looking for the shiny round mirrors that are period to the car. You've got a great looking classic 911 body there..
Why try to "modernize" it? And to improve the front end looks? For about the same money, I'd think a good set of euro H-4 lights would go further than the spoiler bumper, and cost about the same? Just an early 911 phreak's opinion, and it is YOUR car, so do as you please....Oh, and if you do go with the H-4's? Think about the chrome rings, not the paint to body color ones...they fit the year better...

Thanks for the candid response. I think I'll stay with original bumper - I need a project car!

I plan to get the correct mirrors. Was the original mirror only installed on the driver side? If so is the original mirror reversible so you can fit it on both sides?

Are you suggesting H4 lights for the looks or because they are better lights.

Allan...me too, a lottery dream is to build a hot rod like Jack's, only different, you know? Yes, I believe the right and left round mirrors for your car are available in both left and right door models. Say this because even the '72 models that came with a square mirror in the USA have round mirrors mounted on the right door in countries where the driver sits in the right seat. Assuming your current headlights are the USA sealed beams, the H-4's in euro style will not only
make the car look better, you will see better as well. Then, of course, there is the H1 option...twin bulb lights that look similar to the H-4's, give marginally better lighting. But sit down before asking the price on H-1's! Glad I bought mine decades ago, when they were a LOT cheaper. If I were doing it today, I'd probably opt for the H-4's. Guess I'm a little like Jack in that I like the early cars to have bits of chrome showing...well, hell..I'll admit it, I just like the early cars! Have fun with that gorgeous E, okay? Paul

OK - I'm staying with the original bumper and replacing the mirrors.

BUT, I like the original head lamps with the big chrome rings.

Paul, where are you located?

My rule-of-thumb is to do only 'period correct' modifications. I'm sure there were many 69/70/71 911 owners installing S bumpers in 72 & 73! Nonetheless, I have been second-guessing myself on the installation of the S bumper as well. My big problem is with the bumper guards - I hate those things! I suppose if I take them off there will be some exposed mounting holes or something.

You can cover the front overider holes with black plastic plugs from Lowe's or similar large hardware store - looks fine.

Thanks for the pics. The first one(black) is my bumper. My car should be out of the paint shop this week. Then I get to put it together. I will post pics when its done.
P.S. It has the hood mounted CeeBees to go with the S bumper

Hello Allan,
I have a love hate relationship with my front bumper guards. They won out and they are staying. What really looks good with a bumper guard car is a set of original fog lights below. Try a find a copy of "Carrera RS" a big green book costing about $250.00. I think Big Daddy has them for sale. Thumb through it and you will see many photos of awesome 911s. And you'll get a chance to see bumper guards with fog lights below. It's a great book showing the many differant rear spoilers that Porsche was experimenting with in wind tunnel tests. Actually its a "RS" bible.

I TOO need a project car. I've been accumulating many parts. I want a metallic green 69 or 70 coupe to have fun with. I have fun with my present 911 ( Bahama yellow ) But I really want a green car and there is Noooo way I'm going to do a colour change to my car. The paint is still shiny, only a couple of door dings and some wear to some of the edges around the hood and engine lid area. Carpet original and so are the seats and dash....Hell, everything is original in the car except the engine inners. My dad bought me the car new in 1969 when I returned home from that nasty war... ..and only have 240,000 miles on it. The first and last re-build was in Feb. 1978.
Engine and trans. Check out that RS book you'll enjoy it!
Good Luck, Mark
