Colorado loop

I'm thinking it is time for a Colorado drive...we haven't done this in the front range for a few years. The last time we did it we were 50/50 longhoods to later. I'm not sure I want to organize it...but I will throw it out there. The last time we did it, we started basically in Nederland and drove over to Estes Park on 119 for breakfast. We then headed over Trail Ridge Road (highest pass in the US) down through Grand Lake , and over to Winter Park for some alpine slide action and lunch. We headed south up over Berthoud Pass, down to I-70 and east to the Central City Parkway,
through Blackhawk and back up 72 to Nederland.
With all the rain we have had this summer, everything is so green. This needs to happen. Anybody up for the weekend of the 29th -30th? I could nominate a few folks to organize it...(a couple people I have done some welding for...) but I would rather let volunteers step forward.

I think "Axel" needs to stretch his legs a bit:D

porschenut 08-20-2009 04:42 AM

I volunteer to be a participant. I suck at organizing events.

zotman72 08-20-2009 04:55 AM

Wrong weekend for me speedo boy as I will be in the backcountry then. That said, you are right it is time. Too bad my longnose is now an uncivilized race car...

Matt Monson 08-20-2009 05:17 AM

I could be tempted to join the fun. I 'might' have a little something to share...

fbarrett 08-20-2009 07:07 AM

If you don't mind a 912, I'd probably be available to participate.

Lars:

You know the Porsche Breakfast Club I started a couple years ago does these runs all the time. They are VERY good at it. Here's the link:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/porschebreakfastclub/

I bet you could have a pretty big group in no time with Erik's help. My SC is still in pieces so I'm out but I bet you can have a couple dozen cars in no time.

Winter 08-20-2009 08:58 AM

I'd join you guys for a Boulder to Nederland leg. Not so confident of my car's ability to do a full day drive (although I drive it almost every day :)).

Tom:

I'm suffering from a very bad case of "while I'm there" and it has really gotten time consuming.

All you need to do is look in your garage. Mine looks a lot like your silver Targa, except mine's a coupe.

Sounds Like fun Lars,

I will try to be there (if it comes together) with my 4 year old navigator!

Best,

doublestuff 08-20-2009 03:26 PM

I'm out that weekend...

I'll be in Louisville, KY for my wife's Ironman that weekend, but if this drive ends up happening a different time I'm in for sure!

gearheadgreg 08-20-2009 07:05 PM

Mine won't be ready, but I could run tail-gunner in the VW 2.slow. Will be back from the salt flats 36hp challenge!

speedo 08-20-2009 08:13 PM

Ok...so there is interest.

Ok, so there is interest. If someone can make contact with "Eric-breakfast club" I would appreciate the help. Have him PM or email me...I couldn't do it from the site. We have a week to get this organized. I'll spread the word to the RMR and AMR folks...actually...Josh, can you help me? I am looking forward to a group photo at the top of Trail Ridge Rd...what is it ...12,500?

I'll try to put my street car back together and see if it is reliable enough to attend!

Roger posted it on the "Breakfast Club" site.

speedo 08-23-2009 06:36 AM

Ok...Saturday the 29th of August ....7:00 am departure Nederland RTD

Where to meet....RTD lot.
Be very careful coming up the canyon from Boulder into Nederland. The speed drops to 25 mph and they mean it. Go straight through the traffic circle, RTD is a block down on the left. Coming from the south up 72 (from Denver or Coal Creek Canyon), you will pass the coffee railcar on your right as you come into When you hit the traffic circle, go around it 270 degrees till you are pointing west, the RTD parking lot will be a block down on your left. We'll plan to head out at 7:00 am. If we get going early, we won't alarm the local federalies. If you are early...you can grab coffee at the railroad car a block south of the traffic circle. We'll head north on 72 and probably try to do a quick picture 4 miles north of Ned at the over look on the left side to let "stragglers" catch up. Breakfast in Estes and then we head up into the Rocky Mountain National Park. If you have a membership, bring it...otherwise I think it costs $10 per car to go over Trail Ridge Rd...but it will be well worth it.

If you have questions, feel free to email me. If you need directions to Nederland from anywhere...Google maps.

Looks like we will have early, late , 912s and 914s.

Bring your elbow pads for the alpine slide:D Apparently we have some folks claiming to be able to make the descent without braking...yeah

Winter 08-23-2009 07:39 AM

won't make lunch

I won't join you guys for the whole journey, but does anyone want to meet in Boulder and head up to Nederland that morning.

This would require an early start, which probably means getting on the road at 6:15.

I'll do part of the drive over to Estes with everyone, and then have to leave.:(

If anyone is interested in connecting in Boulder, I'll choose a location (with coffee) and will be there at 6:00 for a 6:15 departure.

Our meeting location may change

There is a music festival in Nederland this weekend...so depending on the parking situation...I may need to come up with a plan "B" for a meeting place. On the other hand, we are heading out early, so maybe no big deal. I know some folks "in the know" and as we get closer...they'll advise. We are going to descend on this place for breakfasthttp://www.estesparkbighorn.com/.
In exchange for them having enough tables for us...I told them that I would try to give them a heads up with numbers to expect. It would be a bummer to have 20 people and have to wait for tables (4 people at a time) to get free. We can always dial in our "numbers " and call ahead as we leave Nederland...but it would be nice to get a head-count of who expects to show, so I can forewarn them.
I have 4 in two cars...whatchagotSmileWavy

Matt Monson 08-25-2009 06:19 PM

I'm not gonna make it. I'm gonna be working on the new car. It's got too much junk in it's old tired carbs.

porschenut 08-25-2009 09:05 PM

I'll be there - just me and I'll be bringing one car.

boxster03 08-27-2009 05:17 PM

maybe you can include a little altitude in the run

Ok...we're good to go...for Saturday am.

Nederland RTD...get there early...as we leave at 7:00 am. Looks like a decent turnout. I'll call the restaurant as we leave Ned and head north so they save tables for us. Bring your detectors... and cameras :D Not necessarily in that order

Winter 08-28-2009 05:42 PM

I'll be driving from Boulder to Ned tomorrow, heading up the canyon at 6:15. Hope to see some other P cars on the drive up. Probably will do a bit of with the crew on 119 before peeling off and heading back down to B-town. I've got a very busy weekend with a long "to do" list, so can't make a day of it (and the car is somewhat suspect for longer drives, although one day I'll just have to bite the bullet and go for it!).

I just wanted to thank everyone this morning for letting me tag along for a bit. It was really, really tough to take that right hand turn at Ward off of 119 and head back down to the Front Range (especially because I knew that in an hour, I'd be at Home Depot looking at tile for a bathroom remodel, blech!).

I know you guys are still out there right now, so I hope the rest of the day was just as great for everyone else as the first few miles were for me.

The solo blast down Left Hand Canyon was awesome, as were the sweepers on 119 outside of Nederland with 6 or 7 sweet P cars in front of me. Wonderful visuals and good fun!

I hope to do this again soon and I look forward to all the pics.

Thanks to Speedo (Lars) for getting it all together.

The red 912 pealed off after breakfast, and the rest of us headed up...traffic was not bad. The Boxster that led the way up didn't care, he would pass anybody anywhere. I decided that the best way to take pictures behind me was to just hold the camera out the window facing backwards and shoot

BTW, for those in the flatlands, those 6' extensions on the guard posts in the pic above "Top of the World" and a couple below it, are for the snowplow driver; so he can see where the road is when the snow is nine feet deep.

It gets a lot deeper, but the road is closed all winter.

Great photos! Hveing been up there so many times, I know exactly where some of those pictures were taken.

Is there somebody who can put names to the faces (and thier cars) we see in the photos?
It's always nice to see who's who in this online world.
