1988 Carrera fuel pump problem

My '88 Carrera 3.2 had to be towed home a couple of days ago . A mechanic passing by the stalled car agreed that it seems to be a fuel starvation problem. Symptoms were it turned over but would not run despite having spark. Removed line from fuel filter and turned over but no fuel pumped. Of course it did start the next day but stalled while driving and will not start again. I have replaced the DME relay but no joy. One thread on this forum suggested giving the pump a wee tap with a rubber mallet but to save my life I can't figure out where the pump is located. Can someone tell me where the pump is located and maybe where to tickle it? Thanks in advance.

It's been a while.....but I think the fuel jump is under the front skid plate.....

Thanks Ron. Quick couple of bolts and nuts and the skid plate was off to reveal the pump. Wiggled wire connections and tapped pump body with rubber mallet and was able to spew gas over my garage floor :-). Is it likely that I have to replace the pump given the experience of others? I have been out of work for a while and even a couple hundred bones will make for a unhappy wife...

On my 84 there is a relay/fuse type up in the luggage compartment as well.....May want to pull it and clean a bit..might be cheaper.

Not sure if the 88 has the same.

Colinsco,
I feel your pain. I just went back to work after 7 months off. My '84 spent the whole time in the garage waiting for me to go back to work.

Throw a test light or volt meter across the wire terminals on the fuel pump. Turn the key in the start position, as the engine is turning over you should get 12 volts there.
