Bentley vs Haynes manuals
Wondering about the difference in the Bentley vs the Haynes manuals for the SC's.
Recently I returned a part to a store and was being issued a credit as the man appeared hesitant to make a cash refund. I mentioned needing a shop manual for the '81. He offered to order the Haynes for me. I've heard old farmers say, "That's about as useful as tits on a boar hog." That's about how I feel about the Haynes manual. It's not that helpful to me. Maybe if I was a seasoned 911 mechanic it would be ok, I don't know. ![]() What's the scoop on Bentley? |

as the owner of a 1980 sc and the owner of a Haynes manual i can clearly attest the the Haynes manual for the Porsche 911 is on of the poorest put together excuses for a repair manual i have ever seen, i have used Haynes before for other vehicles and they are ok but i repeat for the Porsche 911 is pisspoor at best i am getting the Bentley but the most useful would be 101 project by ??? i think his name issss WAYNE and happens to run this site, and that is an unbiased opinion , but truth of it the Haynes sucks , i have a almost mint one i would sell cheaper than the shipping would be.
Steve , just my opinion ... . ![]() |

Bentley beats Haynes, hands down. (I've got both of them)

I have Wayne's book, 101 projects for your Porsche, and it is indeed very well put together. I would just like to have something that covers more of the car than the 101 projects does. LOL. "PissPoor" an expression my grandmother used to use.. haven't heard it in a while! |

The Bentley manual is great, something every DIY SC owner must have on their shelf. Of all the DIY general repair manuals available for the SC, the Bentley is by far the best.
For the DIY SC'er to not have that resource, to try to save the $80 or so that it costs is foolish. The Haynes manual does not compare to the Bentley, but it is very inexpensive and not bad to have. |

I am surprised someone who knows how to do it right hasn't. This sounds like an opportunity wish I had this skills.

manual
Bentley and 101. Flippin between the two you can accomplish just about anything with the car. I just recently picked up the bentley after doing many projects with the 101 and the haynes. Wish I would have started with the bentley and 101. They would have been much less guesswork. Bentley is vary detailed and car specific with pics......

+1 for the Bentley.
Just correct the mistake in it about the direction of rotation: It's ccw, NOT cw. ![]()

I buy everything. 2 Bentleys, Haynes, Up-Fixin, Workshop manuals, marine and aircraft mechanical & electrical, etc, etc. Even Radio Shack has a decent $15 electrical softcover for idiots like me. My 911 is well cared for. I even bought the Bentley Carrera book besides the SC Bentley. All make a contribution, some more than others.

I use them both. I use the Bentley for getting good information on the car. I use the Haynes manual as a jack pad to jack up the SC

As others have said the Bentley is much more complete, however, there is, occasionally, a bit of information in the Haynes that is missing from the Bentley. There are also different pictures in the Haynes and it sometimes helps to see an item from a different perspective.
Keep in mind, both have errors. Jerry M '78 SC |

I was going to comment last night and figured somebody else would but they haven't so I'll try to make this point:
It has always seemed that with the Haynes manual, for example, they can ramble on ad-nauseum about how to set the differential backlash, yet this is something that only about 5 guys in the known universe actually need to know how to do, and care about. Yet when it comes to activities that many DIY'ers desperately need to do, such as locate problems with wiring harnesses, air conditioning components, cockpit controls, etc, the Haynes manual is just lame... Step 1: Remove the dashboard. WTF!?!?!?

For the Bentley manual, ignore the pictures that are obviously of a Carrera that are shown in the SC manual.

I use the Haynes to keep the oil from dripping on the garage floor. I use the Bentley to fix the leak.
