912e clutch question

I bought a 912e and it would grind in every gear. Tried to adjust the clutch cable, no improvement. Also there is not any clutch pedal return spring or lever return spring. Pulled the engine and trans and everything looks good. With the trans out moving the clutch lever the tob moved and the fork would end up between the tob and the guide tube. Could this happen when the trans is connected to the engine?
Thanks for any help.
