CA vehicle verification
Anybody out there qualified to verify the veh. ID# on my 1968 911. It has been out of the system for many years. I have all the necessary paperwork from the DMV and just need the ID# verified so I can register and then drive.
Thanks, Matt Cooley

A lot of us have reference books indicating the range on VINs for each year. More specific than that, you'll have to contact PCNA. Your VIN could start with a 3 or a 118.

Yes, Danny_Ocean I belive you are correct regarding the CHP or law enforcement officer. However I think they have to take a course on veh ID's to be qualified. I have a friend who is a county sheriff, but is not veh. ID qualified. I thought I might find a fellow Pelican that could do it so I would'nt have to go to DMV to get a temp. registration than drive to CHP get the car verified than back to DMV to actually register. Or put it on a trailer and head to DMV. I'm just tring to cut down on the hassles.

Went through this myself a year ago. DMV handed me a list of locally based approved sources that charge a minimal fee to verify. I called 2 of them and the one that could make it soonest got my business. I think its kind of like a notary.
In our neck of the woods there are reportedly very few CHP officers that can/will verify vin and the back log was considerable (1 month?). Having the inspectors come out was hassle free and worth the charge. Like you, I didn't want to load and unload via trailer. Home Page vehicle verifiers - Home

Isn't this something the Auto Club can do? When I bought my 73 from out of state, I did all the registering and VIN verification at my local AAA--checked the VINs in the trunk, A-pillar, and door jamb while filling out a form. Is what you seek something different?

ossiblue, I'm a AAA member, they said they don't do veh. ID # verifications, which is probably what you had done when you brought your '73 in from out of state. Maybe I need to try that route again, or ask a different person @ AAA. Southern Cal has plenty of qualified places, but so far I have yet to locate anything local, that is withen about a two hour drive.

For the record, I found someone locally. I used "Vehicle Registration Service" in Watsonville, CA 831-594-5487 She came out to the house, took about ten minutes verifying ID#'s and completed the paperwork all for next to nothing. Hassle free.

Go to the Auto club and get a one day pass then return to them for the free VIN verification.
