Evaporator Box Surprises
I have begun my A/C tear down and took out the evaporator box this weekend to see what sort of core it had. I found it had a serpentine coil ( Rennaire?) from 2005 that appears to be in decent shape. I have to devide to either reuse it or replace with a larger Kuehl core. The fins are pretty clean so any ideas on how to clean it up better before reusing it? Slosh it around in some soapy water? The box itself had none of the snap clips on it. I found 3 of the 4 in the bottom of the sugglers box. The top was only held in place by the L brackets. There was a lot of prestite in the bottom of the smugglers box and around the large round vent. Was that used to stick the bottom in place to prevent rattles or seal the round opening? There was no brass sleeve around the capillary tube. The exposed silver end of the tube was just stuck into the box vertically near the expansion valve. The hose fittings seem to have a lot of surface corrosion on them. Is this from normal condensation? Should they be insulated to prevent condensation? Any suggestions on how to insulate the box and seal the inlets when I reinstall it?

Check out the insulation treatment on this thread. It works great. I used one layer of the insulation vs two. It is available at the Home Depot. The brass sleeves are plentiful. I got one at a local Porsche junk yard. I think sealing the box is important. I ended up with a couple of broken tabs and bought a replacement used one on Pelican.
A/C Upgrade Project starts tomorrow!

If you have the matching tabs, then use the factory clips to hold the two halves together.
