That's a 'Turbotrol' unit w/ factory '74 -89 lines & t-stat. It's a good robust cooler for up through 3.2L.

You can'rt realy overcool a system w/ a functioning t-stat.

As I said it's adequate for up through a 3.2, a 3.6 will overheat w/ just one of those coolers.

I am looking for that exact oil cooler for my '74 911 that has no external cooler. May I ask what you paid for it?

Thanks.

Hello,
After swapping a hose that was not correct, I started the process of "The Install". I removed the oil from the tank, placed the hard lines on the body, with the thermostat loosely attached. The cooler used a bolt on the body that I am sure that was used on the trombone set-up. That left the upper mounting bolt to the body and a strap to the lower valence/horn bracket. The upper bolt was an issue, the nut would be under a hollow section right underneath the data plate. Got out the Rota-Broach and drilled 2 holes about 2" apart and opened the area between them so I could get my fingers on the nut. Got it all installed, replaced the rocker cover, added a 3 quarts of 20/50. and fired it up, crap the thermostat was leaking, 3 of the 4 lines were tight. As I was warming the car up, I noticed a slow drip from one of the flex lines to the cooler. Tomorrow I will go to the hose shop and get the hoses relined. Driving impression will follow! Flicks if anyone cares!
Hola
eric

Hey,
The hose shop hooked me UP! Got the new hoses in and did some idling and oil topping off. Got the oil back onto the middle of the dipstick and took it out for a spin up Hwy 9. Initially I just stayed in the higher gears and throttled it up to generate some heat. Got the tstat to open a about 180F and just started building speed uphill. Temps rose to about 195F when I did my best GTA routine, I was hitting it harder than I normally do, as the speed builds the temps actually start dropping! I stopped at the top to do a leak check and general inspection, all was a ok. At idle for 5 mins temps climbed to 200F, as soon as I took off down hill, still throttling pretty hard the temps dropped to 185F and never rose above that. The only way I can get above 185F, is to go uphill with the skinny pedal close to the floor. I think I am happy, gonna search for a sugar scoop for the marker light position to get a little more directed air to the front of the cooler and call it good. Maybe an electric fan for traffic later on.
Hola
eric

What temps were you getting before the installation of the oil cooler and what was the air temperature when you tested the new cooler?

I own one too

I'm pretty stoked to see this post on the forum. The PO of my car (PI, with I for Idiot!) told me he had disconnected the oil cooler. He did, and one my project for the summer is to re-connect it. The cooler on my car ('75 targa) appears to be the exact same model as the one you've acquired, and it sounds as though you're having success with it.

I'm going to move this project higher up on my to do list. So far, I've only been driving my car shorter distances, but want to get it out for longer drives and it is starting to get hot here.

Thanks for the post and good luck to you, sir!

Don't bother w/ the sccop, do seal the sides and top so that air goes through the serpentine not around it(AC line insulation is convieneient and cheap for this) you can open the notch under the bumper a little more too.

85 degrees is a "cold front" over here.
