A behind the barn find, 71 targa

I really didn't intend to buy this car, but the price was right and winters just around the corner. It's in bad shape and I really just bought it for parts. But I'm wondering if it might be worth saving. I can, or I'm willing to try and do all the work myself, and I'm retired so I have time.

The car is a 1971 Targa.

Vin # 9111112400
Engine # 6117053 type 911/07
Paint # 1510-L

I'm thinking that it is probably the original motor, but not sure. I also see traces of green paint, so I assume that was the original color.

So should I just start pulling parts for my 71 coupe. Or start stripping it down and fire up the wire welder?

Being from St. Louis myself, what part of town did you find this baby? Was it local?

I've got the springplates and t bar tube off a 72 that are available.. I'd need to verify the "soundness" of them. Bob

If I recall correctly, Porsche began using 'long life steel' in May of 1970 for under carriage parts. I for one would check out the soundness of the car and thing strongly about getting it back on the road. There are specific pieces for the inner and outer torsion bar areas that are made to just fit the rusted areas: they've been on the market for over 20 years.

About 20 miles north of Troy, Mo. I know the last two owners, but never knew they had this old car. The last owner asked if I was interested in it as he never had time to work on it. Also it was at his parents place and they have the place listed so they also wanted it out.

I would at least start out trying to restore her. Hit the bad spots first. If you get over your head, you already have the parts pulled to use or sell.

A couple of years ago this was def a parts car. Now I would have to try and restore her.

I think 1510 is Irish Green. Beautiful color.

I agree, try to save her strip the interior and insulation and look for rust if all pans outt good do a resto or make it a solid runner like a rally car. skip all the $$ on a restored interior a couple sport buckets, a carpet kit and away you go.

The webbers were not stock, T would have been Zenith, you dont know what else you may find upgraded.

Save her. Tackle the trosion bar areas first and get the worst out of the way. I've past up two early cars (they were fairly rust free) and now I regret it. There are a lot worse long noses out there that people are saving.

looks like outer rockers have already been replaced in past.
rust at torsion bars is pretty bad but repairable.
look at darryl's website (http://www.darrylsgarage.com/912/912.htm) to see what you're in for.
engine # is correct for 1971, probably original.
i looked for the paint code but couldn't find that #.
closest is 1515: irish green L is for Lesonal paint not Glasurit
go for it.

look what people do to save a 356. way, way worse rust than yours. i used to part those out, but i would think about that now. like bob dylan wrote, "he was only a hobo, but one more is gone".
