Question What is required to upgrade a 2.7 to 3.0?

I am purchasing a 3.0 for my 1977 911. All the porsche mechanics around here are terrified of my 2.7 and highly recommend the 3.0. I would like to know what I need to put the 3.0 in my 77/911? Any other helpful hints (installing) would be greatly appreciated.

the 6 pin CD unit is required. the black/purple tach wire may need to be spliced into the body loom. can't remember for sure. the 77 tach may not work. some do some don't. if you can get the tach cheap, you may need it. otherwise it's a bolt in. you also have to change one side oil line. the 77 exited under the oil cooler, the 3.0 under the chain housing.

Mike,

It would have helped to know the year of the SC it is coming out of ...

But, at the bare minimum, the CDI-unit and Voltage regulator, and the whole console and wiring harness going to the engine, if you can get it. If it is a later engine with O2 sensor, then you need the OXS controller and relay under the seat, and as much of the wiring harness associated with them. Tachometer is also different, I believe, with the six-pin CDI-unit, so that is an issue, too.

I hope you have, or are planning to get the Volumes 3-6 (the second set) of the factory service manuals for '72-'83 cars ... at the bare minimum!

Thumbs up

Thank you Warren, it gives me a place to start. I have few more questions I need to ask to seller. It's hard parting with $200.00 in manuals, but I know it's worth the investment. I am a bit confused, what is the console you are referring too?

Mike,

The 'console' is that panel on the left side of the engine compartment, bolted to the fender/firewall on rubber shock mounts ... where the relays, fuses, Voltage regulator -- on earlier cars, CDI-box, and 14-pin connector are all located under a black plastic cover. It is probably called half-a-dozen different things by different people!

I just finished the 2.7 to 3.0 swap on my 1977 911. Email me with any questions. I did all the work myself it was alot of fun. My motor came out of a 1978sc. The fuel pump is compatable. It is pretty much a bolt up operation for the early sc motors. There are some interesting hook ups for the car to the motor at the 14 pin connector. sc's do not have egr circuits. The tach is triggered from the cd box. The fuel pump cutout will have to be spliced into the harness or the fuel pump will run continusely. I stayed with the stock CIS system for the 3.0. IF you want any of the details let me know.
