New to this site? Just bought a 911?
Welcome!
Why not tell us a little about your car as an introduction – and a way to meet people - Please start a new thread for that (we want to keep this one as a 'help' type thread only, Tell us what you know about the car... what did the pre-purchase inspection reveal? - what major service records did you inherit? - was it a Calif. car or a "49 state version"? Searching: Many, many things have been explained before, usually repeatedly. You can use the search box (light blue box "Search this Forum" on RH side at top of the main page for this bbs), and that should keep you busy for a while. If you can’t find something, sure go ahead and post. People will be less likely to attack you if you post that you DID in fact try searching first, and list the search terms you used. You will also want to read through the Tech Articles section. Have a look in the column above the link for the this 911 BBS If that is not enuff, try this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...54#post2955054 What Does xxx Mean? Acronyms, Abbreviations, Technical Terms & Jargon Important Safety Things to Do RIGHT NOW: The VERY FIRST thing you should do is to flush out all the old brake fluid, replace all the rubber brake hoses with new rubber ones & then refill with a high quality brake fluid (Motul or Ate, etc.) and bleed the brakes. Next, check the date codes on the tires - if older than 5 years, discard. Then, change the trans fluid (use new Swepco 201) and change the oil and air filters and the engine oil (use Brad Penn). Enjoy. Things Not To Do: - this forum is for technical posts about the Porsche 911; questions about Porsches made after 1989 may get better responses on the forum those models - Wayne has been threatened with law suits for people saying bad things about certain vendors. Try posting those on Rennlist (a non-profit) and link to them instead. - Wayne does not like people posting direct competitor’s information, such as Other Aftermarket Places – he is, after all, in business Where To Buy Parts: Here – this site is paid for (the maintenance and hardware that runs it) by profits from Pelican Parts; it only makes sense to support this site in whole or in part; also Pelican has outstanding customer service and the prices are quite low Your Local Dealer – if you have one, then maybe it makes sense to support a local source of parts Stoddard’s – a sort of super-dealer, that can get hard to find parts and with parts guys who are very knowledgable Other Aftermarket Places – Wayne says he can get everything any other place can get. Pelican also provides support for what is really a community of people with allied interests. Used Parts: - look in the classifieds section here - or a wrecking yard – search to find comments on the various ones A Few Good Books to Start Reading: Paul Frere. The 911 Story. Wayne Dempsey. How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines. Wayne Dempsey. 101 Projects for your Porsche 911. Bruce Anderson. Porsche 911 Performance Handbook. More info: Best 911 Book Reads Your Contribution: If you derive help from the site, it makes sense to give some back, to “pay it forward” in contemporary parlance. You can do this even if you are not a 911 or Porsche expert (I’m not). The way to do it is to compile information on a certain topic and then post links to that information on this site. Then the next time somebody needs help with that topic their search will find your nice compilation, you will become famous, and people will send you free beer. Also, the real experts will be freed from answering low level queries and can concentrate on the more difficult questions. Last edited by RWebb; 06-23-2009 at 07:59 PM.. |

Nicely done RWebb!
My only suggestion when posting a new topic: Try to stay away from titling your post something like "HELP I xxx my xxx" instead try be more descriptive listing the part or function at issue, include year make model.. This helps future searches find your post and the accompanying responses, thus adding to the wealth of information available in this data base.. Just my .02 cents Welcome!

Hello, my name is David, and I just bought my first Porsche--1984 Carrera. Options are the Fuchs, three-spoke wheel and spoilers. It's a California car and was originally sold through Merlin Olsen Porsche-Audi. Other than Turbo valve covers, CD player and recovered seats, it's pretty much as delivered. Even the paint is original. At some point it got a Turbo tail, too.
I picked up the car a little over a week ago, and it's been great. I averaged 24 mpg on the drive home and didn't have to add any oil. The car didn't come with a ton of records, but the pre-purchase inspection revealed good compression numbers. Plus a friend had owned it since last year. (He tends to go through cars quickly.) Plans are to enjoy it. Plus I'm sure it will show up in our magazines. People said we needed a little more Porsche editorial, so I figured it was my civic duty to buy one. ![]() David S. I think you may have to make it a little bit more clear that they're to start a new thread introducing themselves.

Once again, great job on this.
I would like to add that buying/aquiring a Bentley manual or at least a Haynes repair manual can be helpful to a new owner. Wayne's 101 book is a great tool but the Bentlley gives info on torque specs, disassembly/reassembly, etc. I consider it a tool just like the ones in my tool box. I did not know of Pelican when I got my 911. Even though I pulled the engine/trans the first time without any help, life became much easier when I joined. The more a new guy understands, the more help this site can provide.

One critical thing to check is your fuses. Be SURE that each & every fuse is the correct rating - people often plug in a higher rated fuse, causing many many hours of misery later on.
Here is an example of what can happen: Cooked wires…..scary |
