My SC with a modified stock exhaust (1-in-1 out modified to 1-in-2-out)
During the rebuild of my car, I got a hold of a NOS stock muffler, and that is what I put on. Not being a 911 guy, I was not sure what it was going to sound like. When I turned the key for the first time, tho, I was a little underwhelmed with the exhaust sound. Very quite. So quiet, the engine whine dominated. I had also picked up a modified exhaust from a fellow Pelican, so I thought I'd put it on and give it a go. When I picked it up, tho, I heard a rattling inside. Peering thru the welded on added pipe, I could see that the perforated "U" tube inside had come loose. So, I cut it open, pulled out the U-tube and welded it back together. After a cleanup and painting, it went on the car.
It is definitely much throatier - esp at idle. Little throttle blips give a nice deep rumble. On the road, tho, it sounds a bit uncivilized and ratty. I think it is partly that the exhaust sounds different from inside the car. I was even a bit embarrassed driving thru the neighborhood with it and kept the RPM's low so I didn't get nasty stares. I need to have someone drive it for me while I listen to it on a drive-by to get a good idea of how it actually sounds. Geoff

I modified my stock muffler years ago with a second outlet. I grew tired of how loud it was so I sourced a short piece of muffler tubing slightly smaller than the existing second outlet and welded a cap onto it. I simply slide it into the second outlet and secure it with two sheet metal screws. I can remove it whenever I want for the sportier sound (mountain runs) but I don't have to live with the loud exhaust all the time.

I was wondering whether I could weld in a baffle or tube in the right outlet to reduce the size of the hole a bit to tame it a little.

The hole I drilled for the second outlet was only about 1.25". I did this after reading an old post that recommended this to help "balance" the muffler. I have heard other mufflers that have the hole the same size as the outlet pipe and they are much louder and it feels like all the exhaust is coming out of the added outlet.

Yeah, I think I might cut the added pipe close to the muffler and add a flange joint that I can put different sized baffles into to experiment.
