Rennshift and coupler adjust

I just installed the rennshift in my 72 and I'm wondering how one adjusts the coupler? I know how to adjust it with a stock shifter, but how should I do it with this shifter as this shifter is set in the 3rd and 4th plane. It's pretty impossible to to hold the shifter to the far left (spring loaded), keep the shift rod to the far right and tighten the coupler all at the same time. Or is the 3rd and 4th plane considered far left? I have not driven the car, but want to get it somewhat right before I start the final tuning on the coupller.
Thanks

A bungee cord to hold the shifter to the left (attached to the door) frees up a hand!

JB,
I'm speculating that you have one of these shifters, if so then the bugee cord sound like a great idea?
I had a 72 510 that I auto-xed, and I loved that car! Too bad I drifted it into a parked car at around 50 mph in the rain.

Bungee cord or a helper.

I don't have a Rennshift but have installed a spring to center the shifter. (same concept but free)

510s rock!!

I have a first generation WEVO coupler - same concept.

Play with the transmission shaft to get the tranny in neutral. Then give the shaft a little twist toward the passenger side (CCW as you look at the tranny from the front of the car).

Position the shift lever in the neutral position against the left side of the shift tower between 1st and 2nd gear. Make sure to look at the neutral position (forward and backward alignment) relative to the 5th and reverse lockout.

Use the bungee to hold the shifter in place towards the driver's side.

Tighten the clamp to the coupler. It should be right....

Do NOT adjust the factory way with the shifter against the side. You need to let the springs in the shifter do their job and maintain the shifter in the center plane (3rd gear).

Loosen the coupler while in 3rd and allow the shifter to self center.

Tighten the coupler, test, and make slight adjustments from this position until the shifter goes from neutral to 3rd without a feeling of being pushed right or left as 3rd gear is engaged (this is still with the car off in the garage).

Road test, again checking that 3rd and 4th can be engaged without any misalignment between the neutral spring centering and the in-gear positioning.

I have the Rennshifter and I simply put the tranny in 3rd gear before swapping out the shifter. the only thing I had to do after that was to adjust for throw cause I wasnt getting all the way into second. Aside from that, I havent touched it and it works great. Thanks James for a great product
