I have had lots of great replies to my cries for help last week- thanks to everyone...I am getting caught up since my S has been down. Long story short- I learned not to let anyone touch my 911 unless they are porsche people. I paid a regular guy who professed he was a master at everything...he determined I needed a Permatune CDI box...then after getting one (thanks Joe Courey-Hyena Motorsports www.hyenamotorsports.com for helping me- I am going to bank on monday) I then am told there is no spark after the new CDI box...but power to the points (after new coil and CDI box) Since the car is still not wanting to start-I finally asked my parts guy (Sand and Street Parts-Thanks Billy) who is the Porsche guy I can trust. Well after a short conversation with Justin Stokes- Stokes Porsche- He told me do not let anyone else touch it-let him sen his tow truck and he would fix it. Well being a nervous wreck for the last several days, I get a call from Justin and he says guess what- good news- took me 2 minutes...bad news- your points were not opening and closing...the black shaft on the opening point broke off- and they are housed in a Morelli Distributer- and he says none available. So I am happy it isnt a major deal, but then the replacement for a 2.2 1970 911T Bosch distributor is costly and hard to locate...So now I stop at my good friends place (Mike at OverSeas Parts in Oakland Park Florida- Mike@overseasparts.com says get me the old points- I have a slew of Morrelli stuff-and Mike has what you need that is for sure- like a old auto parts antique store-seriously..) So I call Justin and say guess what- and he tells me guess what - he has a old school porsche nut who gave him the correct number for a set of bosch points that match th original morrelli's....So I learned and could have save a lot of money by only using a Porsche genuine tech shop- by sad state of affairs turned out to be ok- but I just wanted to say don't trust anyone unless they have the time to talk and know what they are talking about. I lost a lot of money not taking the car to the right place.

I'm not buying it either. The only things that are missing are the pop up banners.

Maybe it's for real... I'm sure we could all tell similar stories.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but a double screw sounds like a bad thing.

Most on the Pelican and other practice the “Bambi Rule” – If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. There are certain exceptions with an organization with the same initials as Mickey Mouse for consumer protection issues.
The initial ‘mechanic’ in this thread did not live up to his professed ‘… he was a master at everything.’ Even the lamest garage jockey knows to check the points. If the CDI had power, checking the points is mandatory. He simply didn’t know to disconnect the wire from the points, connect a multimeter (Ohms function) and crank the engine. He probably didn’t even remove the cap to visually inspect in the distributor and manually operate the advance mechanism to check for sticking at full advance. Keeping this fun and instructive is fun for us all. Best, Grady

MORE OF YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS STORY THAN THE ONE THAT STARTED THIS POST: FWIW, I believe his post. My very first Porsche was a 68 912 which I bought in 1988. I took the car to local Porsche dealership for service . . . they said "thats a VW engine you have in there, we only work on Porsche engines . . . we dont even have parts for your car . . . .I laughed, you must be joking, this is the final evolution of the 356 engine . . . . no laughter . . . . sorry, we cant help you. That was my 1st, since then I am now on my 4th Porsche and so much wiser from the journey regarding knowledge and ownership. While there are many owners that are gifted DIY mechanics, and the majority of the owners are blessed with access to reputable, qualified repair shops, not all FIRST experriences are so lucky. Thanks goodness this board and those who live here do a good job of helping to locate quality shops as those that should be avoided. If we are all completely honest, somewhere in the ownership process, while we were learning, have had our share for "experiences', some too embarrasing to even post here on this board, including mee

Back when I got my 911 there was a very gifted mechanic at the dealer in Honolulu he gave me much astute and welcomed advise and ******** had a really good head mechanic that would help if asked but in the years following I have found that if you want true out of the box thinking and troubleshooting of any vehicle you don't go to a dealership now it seems they just train their mechanics to be cookbook parts changers and nothing more. I agree with most that a true 911 mechanic is required for our cars, some have found that VW mechanics may suffice but I would work side by side with him until I felt comfortable that he knew what he was made of a simple example is washing a case if they use what they do for a regular motor then your precious case is trash when they get done. The original posters story is valid and I think most of us have been in this boat, I almost was because I thought I had trashed my motor and I had asked the local PCA for help finding a reputable porsche shop to do some prep work for me and possibly machining and got no response hence my sig change so I was considering my local options thank goodness it was not fatal as I would have made a big mistake.

For what's it worth, I have heard very good things from a couple of seperate P-car owners in south Florida that swear by Justin Stokes and his shop....
Not trying to advertise, Just sayin'
