New member hello and 1st big problem!
 

Hello, I am new to working on Porsches. I am trying to get a 1977 930 running after sitting for many years for a friend. The car has around 60,000 miles on it. I think I have reached my first stumbling block. While replacing the spark plugs I noticed this loose part moving around. fished it out with a magnet. Does anyone know what this is? and the best way to go about fixing it? can it be replaced without removing the engine? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1252768582.jpg

Welcome! That is a broken head stud. Do a search and you will find many many pages of info on broken head studs. I just rebuilt my engine because I had 2 broken.

As JMH said, broken head stud, and yes the engine / transmission needs to come out, and the studs need to be replaced. Also around 60 K, you might want to look at valve guides. The test is if you can move the end of the valve stem side-to-side with a screwdriver you need new guides. Ignoring broken head studs and shot valve guides will escalate the repair costs. With the right tools and and skills, the head studs can be replaced at the kitchen table (joke), but the heads need to be sent out for inspection and repair. You'll need good manuals with specs to tear down and rebuild. Lots of folks here have done it, and will be glad to help on the internet. Throw in some beers, and you may draw locals out of the wood work ;-)

Depending on your skill and your luck, it could mean hundreds or (especially with a 930 engine) thousands. Don't let it bug you though, just search and read and everything will be fine.

Spend enough time on this site and you'll be posting pics of yourself from inside the engine bay before you know it.
