Flushing transmission question

Hello everyone

I have my 915 out of the car and seperated from the engine. I was intending to stand it vertically and flush degreaser through it. (in the past, I have opened up old trans and found some very small metal filinngs stuck in crud in the nooks and cranies).

My question is after flushing it, do I need something through the tansmission to prevent corrosion if the box will be sitting around for a couple of months / Is there and easier way to "preseve" the box to prevent corrosion?

Cheers

R

Why not wait the couple of months before you flush it? Then put it straight into use.

I'm by no means an expert and hope someone else who is will step up to the plate, but somehow flushing a transmission with degreaser doesn't sound like the right thing to do. I would think perhaps flushing with clean transmission fluid would be more appropriate, but I'm not sure. Anyone else to chime in?

I wouldn't do it. If there's a substantial amount of metals shavings floating around in there it's because the gearbox needs a proper rebuild. Flushing it is kind of pointless.

My pure guess is ... if you have crud in the crevices of the tranny and it is not doing anybody any harm, and now you stand it up on its end, flushing the thing with degreaser, and all of a sudden that crud is going to find its way into places that don't like crud like bearings and gears and so forth.

Leave it right side up, do more oil changes, if that is what you are trying to clean.

Or, disasseble it, clean it, and put it back together if it really bothers you.

To the best of my knowledge, there is not one single manufacturer who recommends "flushing" anything. Engine, transmission, cooling system, etc. UNLESS there is a recognized problem that can only be relieved by flushing. Minor metal filings is NOT a major problem, it's normal. If it bothers you, change the fluid, run it a while and change it again.

As I said, there are NO MANUFACTURERS who recommend flushing anything. The only people pushing flushing are crooks and idiots.
