Early Dash light option
Came across this picture of a dash light on a 68 912. Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with SWB cars but I've never knew such an option was even offered. Pretty cool, IMO. It's one of those little oddities that keeps one's knowledge of these cars from ever being complete.
How many of you out there have this on your car? Curious to know how common it was. ![]()

And what does the little lever above it do?

Well, not in parts book, and never heard of such. I think it is cool, but not OEM.
The lever above it is the fresh air valve.

The lever is the air control for the windshield defrost. That is standard.

I have something "similar" in a 67 912 euro targa, different knob, has a knob type end with a twist lever to light the unit. it is a solid mounted unit does not pull out, bolts thru the dash as the lighter socket., not stuck into the cig lighter as it looks is more to the right in the area below fog switch area. Car also has the lighter in std. position,
Will try to post a pic later. Have not seen another. Regards |

Here are some older pics, quite a bit different "BUT"
first pic on top of light towards left there is a small lever to roll / slide to turn it on. Next shows a dash layout, you can see the real cig. lighter more left in the regular spot. Then another of light over radio obviously non stock (maybe I will put the dealer option AM 8Track Saphire from the 68 parts car in it?) Final pic is a bonus that came with the car, The Porsche Air, system!! Truly an option I dont understand, 1967 euro Targa, 912, why do AC?? (because you can??) But above all why on the 616 motor of all things, I dont get it. It was one of the first things I was going to pull out of the car BUT smarter men have advised against it. On the light, made using what looks like std lighter socket BUT the light will not come out less removing the brackets on the other side of the dash, was thinking a ralley light but after some research I think not. Any info welcome Regards ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Ossi blue, yours IS in the cig lighter socket position under the fresh air control lever??
How does it work?? Pull to turn on and slide out exposing bulb?? 68 was the first yr of the knob shown on your pic. so maybe a style change?? Regards |

Both of those look like what we used to call "map lights". The idea was to let the navigator read a map or rally chart without ruining the drivers night vision. There were several variants (some on flex stalks etc.) so either of these might have been an aftermarket accessory or a dealer installed option or...?

I have a Euro 911 S 1968... no such item in mine, and dash knobs not modified. With no such entry in the parts manual I would think aftermarket. Cool, anyways.
