Thumbs down Neutral isnt really neutral?

When I start the car it is in neutral. When I go to put it in Reverse it is spinning a lot and I get grinding kinda like there is no synchro (or bad synchro) and the shafts have not matched speeds at all. why would the shaft spin if it is in neutral? Fixes or just live with it?

Best regards,

Michael

You need to be clearer in your explanation. Some of your post makes no sense.

Are you saying you were in neutral and when you tried to shift to reverse, that it won't go in, and you're grinding? If so, your rear shift coupler may have let go. You have a couple of bushings up front that wear also, but the coupler seems to wreak more havoc. Do a search on these terms, and you'll get tons of info here. An inexpensive and simple fix.

That is, if I interpreted you correctly.

if it's in neutral and the clutch is not engaged, then the input shaft on the transmission is rotating until you put the clutch in. then the shaft starts to slow down, this is the point that it can grind going into reverse (which does not have syncros). is that what your saying? if it is, that's normal, just wait a second before you put it in reverse

Put it in first gear then reverse. The main shaft will stop when first is selected allowing a smooth shift into reverse.

Hi guys! Thanks for all your comments. I think James Brown hit the issue on the nail. Ed, when I start the car up I have it in neutral. Then I'll shift into reverse to say get out of a parking spot. On that shift into reverse I am doing it slowly because I can literally feel (and hear) the teeth knocking. It will slip in to gear just fine after the knocking synchronizes both shafts.

If I get you right, James, I should just push the clutch down, wait a few seconds for the shaft to slow/stop, and then shift into reverse? Sounds easy enough. I totally did not realize that revers has no synchro. Makes sense.

Best regards,

Michael

Sounds like your linkage is out of adjustment or your coupler bushings have failed.

It has nothing to do with the linkage or coupler. It is as James Brown stated.

If waiting doesn't do the trick, then you don't have enough freeplay and the clutch is dragging the disc slightly.

I see this all of the time. Your clutch is out of adjustment and is not disengaging. I suggest that you fix this right away, as keeping it like this will damage your transmission synchros significantly.
