'83 911 SC (Hard Starting Problem)

My '83 SC is giving me some nagging problems. When I drive the car for 30 min - hour straight and then let it sit for a while...It takes forever to restart. It will turn, turn but wont start. I will floor it until I smell gas and then eventually it will roughly start. Once started, it will run smooth and fine.

Now, if I drive it and only let it sit for a few minutes (like in and out of a store)...no problem! The only thing that I can think of is...I had just filled up with gas prior to me really noticing this so I'm trying to run this tank down and refill (at another location) to see if this helps.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Try some new gas first but most likely it is your fuel accumulator that's bad. It keeps fuel pressure in the lines so it is "there" when you go to start.

I don't believe that pumping the pedal is needed with fuel injection. The electric fuel pump negates having to do that.

I have always been instructed NOT to when started a fuel injected car.

Had the same problem with my '83SC two years ago. As suggested above, it was the fuel accumulator. Easy fix. Only posting to add another data point, and give you confidence that it is pretty easy to do. Good luck.

so where is the fuel accumulator located?

On the left side of the engine compartment behind the fuel filter.
