Headliner Installation Question

I am installing a new headliner in my 84 911 that I have apart for painting. The existing burgundy headliner is not in bad shape compared to some but since I have the glass out I want to update it.

I have read several posts on the subject and have not found much info on the metal rods used in the C pillar base area.

This is a sunroof car. The original headliner has a pouch and short metal rod ( about 8" ) at the base of each C piller to fix that point tight. The replacement liner does not have these pouches sewn in.

Has anyone tried to sew in the pouches to make a better connection point along that area or is it not necessary ?

I was thinking or taking the old liner out and using it as a template to reproduce the pouches. The only trouble I see with this approach is that it may be difficult to keep things tight, you would almost have to start there and mover forward , which is probably very difficult, I believe you have to work for the center to the corners.

How have others dealt with this issue ?

Thanks

Ross

headliner

Completed the installation of the headliner on my 71E recently and ran into the same issue. No pocket, so I wrapped the rods with the headliner and glued it in place, leaving it just short enough to get some stretch when fastening down. If i remember correctly, I did this dead last.

Regards,

Al

THanks

That is a good idea, I never considered glue as I didn't think it would have the hold required.

Did you use the same glue that you used for the edge gluing ? What product is it ?

Thanks

I used Permetex Super Weatherstrip Adhesive, as well as the 3M brand (the yellow, elephant snot) with good results. Due to the extra length of the headliner, in that area, I was able to roll the headlined around the rod several times.

Al

I also made my pockets using super weatherstrip adhesive. This was one of the last steps in my headliner installation.

First I stretched the C pillar section down to tension it, and then I marked the position on the headliner of each of the two prongs that hold the bar down. Then I marked a line between them, which gave me the exact location of where the fold should be. I applied the glue, placed the metal bar in position, and folded the headliner material over the metal bar, right where the fold mark was. It worked perfectly.

can you post a pic of the burgundy headliner?

Sure ,

I will post a pic , it will be tomorrow I left my camera at work. I bought the burgundy from GAHH . It is pricey at about $210 but an excellent match to the original.
