Found sacrificial corrosion anodes in 1973 gas tank
I have never seen this in a gas tank but my 1973 has a few loose sacrificial anodes in it.
This is normally used on steel hull boats to prevent corrosion. Has anyone else found this in a Porsche tank? Was this done by Porsche? |

Is your tank from a 1973.5T/CIS? This tank is unqiue only to this model year based on its swirl pot and fuel pickup configuration. Several of the internal components are not metal but a polymer including the baffles/deflector.
Anodes for cathotic protection/electrolysis? I have zincs in my marine diesel heat exchanger and on my prop shaft, but a Porsche fuel tank? The only current relative to the Porsche tank is off the 12v fuel level sender but thats shielded by the cork gasket. I wonder though how the tank is grounded although they have rubberized coatings and rest on a foam gasket. Maybe its the metal retaining fittings that keep it attached in the trunk at four locations. Why would Porsche consider a sacrifial anode in a fuel tank? Maybe someone will chime in with experience here............. Bob 73.5T/CIS |

Bob, I have 2 tanks. One is original to my 911S that is being redone based on your older post at a radiator shop. The second tank I have is flawless with no rust inside and the above mentioned anodes. This tank is from a 73 CIS and has an orange colored fuel trap inside. I'm hoping to use the CIS tank since it is so clean.

Could they possibly be some of those "catalyst" pellets sold by the marketers that supposedly increase your gas mileage?
