80/90
I was going to change the trans. fluid this weekend because I am not happy the way my car shifts into first gear, lumpy and sticky is about the way I would describe it. The shop I went to for the fluid only had 80/90 Valvoline, I was looking for 75/90. Would there be a big difference if I used this fluid? If so what would the difference be? Philip 87 euro G50

The lower number is for when it is cold so it should help some when you first start it up. Just make sure you are using a quality synthetic like Redline, Mobil 1 or a number of others that folks prefer. Also make sure you are using the correct fluid for whether you have LSD or not. If you are not sure, do a search and you will find a ton of info.

Texaco Synstar
This is what we use in our street and race applications........G50 only...not for 901 or 915 gearboxes.
.Chevron Products Co. said its new Texaco Syn-Star GL SAE 75W-90 is designed to meet Revision C of Dana Corp.'s (Spicer Axle Division) SHAES 256 specification, which went into effect in the second quarter of 2007. Texaco Syn-Star GL meets all major OEM warranty requirements and is recommended as a rear axle and differential lubricant in on- and off-highway vehicles when operating under severe conditions and in extremely cold or hot environments. According to Chevron, its new product includes other benefits, among them: improved equipment durability, extended drain capabilities, improved thermal and oxidation stability, reduced churning losses, and improved fuel economy at low operating temperatures |

Philip,
I'm using Quaker State 75W140 full synthetic gear oil which is readily available at your local Canadian tire store and it works for me and my 1989 G50... I found that once warm after, say 10 minutes it shifts like butter and i have less grinding in between shifts... Of course everybody has their own preference, especially on this forum... so guys don't shoot me down,i'm just stating what works for ME !!! Phil

Philip.....
The advice is not to use synthetic for the 915 g'box which uses Porsche synchros. Since we're talking the G50 g'box with Borg-Warner synchros.... synthetic is the way to go.

jack up the back end of the car with both rear wheels off the ground. Neutral. Turn the wheel manually and if the opposite wheel turns in same direction you have LSD. If they turn in opposite directions you have an open diff.

jack up your rear end, leave it in neutral, spin the left wheel forward, if the right also spins foward then you have LSD.

Oh, and if you take it to a shop for a tranny rebuild, then it does not do that anymore, the shop stole your LSD.
