964 Doohicky - What Is This?
During rust remediation on my 1990 964 C4 (too many salty winters) I found this device, it is the grey thing in the corner of the aluminum plate:
![]() It sits on top of the front oil cooler, and was mounted in the round depression, here: ![]() What is it? It can't be too critical, as the device is cracked and broken and the wires are completely rotted off. Looks like maybe a speed control resistor for the cooling fan? It is a wound wire inside a ceramic puck. Obligatory pic of the rust resolution (POR-15): ![]() |

It looks very different, but in that location on a 993 one would find a resistor for the oil cooling fan. They do get hot and crumble after years of use.
There are 2, one on the passenger side for the oil cooler fan and one on the drivers side for the AC fan/2nd oil cooler fan(if you have one) These are the updated ones w/ the cooling plate ![]() Installed passenger side ![]() the drivers side is sort of hidden behind the AC lines, you need to swap using Braile or drop the whole assembly ![]()
