smugglers box a/c removal
I am trying to remove such and I have all of the perimeter bolts out & brackets & the 2 a/c lines disconnected & out of the way.
The unit is rotating like a bolt is holding the center of the unit but I cannot find any other bolts...possibly I need to remove the a/c boxes side clips to remove the top of the plastic box?? It appears that I would break the plastic a/c box if I try to remove these side clips on the box... Any ideas?? Thanks, Bob

I just removed the smuggler's box A/C unit when I was parting out my '83 SC. It was a PAIN. There is the fan resistor located in the passenger footwell. Be sure to remove the screws and face plate as it connects to the bottom of the unit.
Be careful. The plastic gets old and brittle.

I just did this yesturday in my 84 carrera. You remove the 4 10mm bolts to get the top plastic cover off (the one with the 3" hose comming off the top). after the 2 a/c lines are disconnected, lift out the condensor. To get the bottom tray out, remove the wood plank from the pass side footwell and remove the 4 screws that hold the square shaped piece and the tray will lift out. If you need some pics let me know and I can take some. -Brian

Had the same problem, only after I broke did I find out about the connection within the passengers footwell.

You didn't have to remove the belly pan to get to 1 hose clamp?

Weight savings.
People tend to delete their AC systems in these cars, some of which resides in the smugglers box. Most AC systems work poorly and are considered 'dead weight'. The don't remove the smugglers box just the crap that is in it. In which case the foot well screws are good to know about...
