Optional heating (72)
I have noted that there are "vented" and "non-vented" tunnel covers (rear area over shift rod coupling). The parts cat. Suggests that the vented unit is for optional heating. How does one know (other than pouring on the heat)? Or is there another reason for the venting?

The early cars could have an optional gasoline-fired Webasco heater located in the smuggler's box. The heat is ducted through the round, capped, tube at the lower right of the box. That tube is a direct connection to the tunnel where the heat would exit through the rear vented cover.

It has been a while since I have looked at one of these Webasto heaters. My '67 had one in it. IIRC the vented rear tunnel cover was for the air intake. The gas heater then blew the heated air through the vent system.
