Paint recommendation for engine shroud?

Will be removing intake this weekend to replace all gaskets and spacers to fix intake leak. Thinking about removing and repaiting the shroud while I'm at it. What type of paint have people used?

Thumbs up

As long as you prep with a plastic primer it will come up fine. I did mine with plastic primer and a 2k paint.

Just about any good quality heat resistant paint will do...

Just one thing. You need to get it very clean before you paint it.
When I did mine I got "fish eyes" all over it even after cleaning it with acrylic thinners.

You could try some Marine Clean from POR15 to get it really clean before painting.
POR15 also sell heat resistant paints.

No need for plastic primer. The shroud is fiberglass so you can use any quality primer and paint.

I used GLOSS BBQ paint from my local hardware. It looks okay but isn't very scratch resistant. wiring harness and spark plug wires did a number on it.

PS: remember that the shroud is dyed FG so you will not get a factory look back once it is painted. You can lightly wet sand small scratches out and clean the hell out of it and it will return to some resemblance of new depending on the beginning condition. Outside of that... there is not much to do, but paint it.

I painted my engine shroud with the epoxy primer and single-stage acrylic enamel tangerine color that I used to paint the car. I wanted a smooth look so I color-sanded it and buffed it out. It still looks like new after 4 years.

VHT paint works really well too. Good to over 2000 degrees and meant for exhaust. Works great on the underbody to prevent rust (is also salt resistant).

Color: paisley or plaid !

Geronimo,

I painted the fan with Rust-Oleum Professional stainless steel paint in a spray can from Lowe's. I think it actually has stainless steel particles in the paint because it is very resistant to heat and has a nice natural stainless appearance. I use it on brake calipers, engine parts, bolts, and anything else that I don't want to rust. It goes on any type of material and seems to last a long time.

Best would be to sand with fine grit then use a rubbing compound on a buffer, NOT paint.

if you do paint use a FG paint or add flex agent - it will never look as real as a restored FG one.

mine is painted tho.

I'm planning on just refreshing the existing black color with paint. Tyson Schmitt recommends krylon fusion paint and since I already have some I'll probably go with that. I might try some polishing compound on my 3" random orbital buffer first to see how it looks before resorting to paint.
