10-30 for the winter
the guy at the BradPenn oil supplier says I should use 10-30 for the winter,
and 20-50 only if it's a race car,, which it's not. so I'll be putting in BP 10-30 soon.

15-40 may be more appropriate for your climate - check the manual.

No, never use 10w30. Whoever made that recommendation doesn't know a Porsche from a Ford. If you need a winter viscosity and want to use Brad Penn, run a 50/50 blend of 0w30 and 20w50 Brad Penn. That's what I do, since I don't stock their 10w40. Before they started offering a 10w40, their techs would recommend just doing the 50/50 blend like I do and run.

Yup, Wix/Napa Gold filters are awesome - best bang for the buck. Just as good if not better than the Mahle filters.

Porsche recommended 30w Shell Oil back in the early days. If it was good enough for Porsche its good enough for me

now what should I do.?
I sent my son to go pick up the 10-30 today, and just got home and read these posts. So, do I send him back, and exchange for 20-50 and use that for the winter too? I will drive the car on cold days, just not snow, if I can manage not to. I was planning to buy 20-50 like all the long discussions here say to, but then got off track by the oil guy. Will the 20-50 be the best choice for winter, too? Or blend some 10-30 and some 20-50? Like go exchange half the case of 10-30?

His car is a '78 not a 1950. But your point is valid. I would visit my Porsche mechanic and ask him for a winter oil recommendation for your car. He will be the one rebuilding your engine if you choose poorly, not the Brad Penn dude.
Asking an oil retailer which engine oil to use is like asking the maker of the stethoscope if you have a heart murmur. Mark

I AM my porsche mechanic. that's the issue I guess. just 20-50 would be my call.

Scot,
Sorry, nothing personal but I should have been more clear. Ask a local porsche mechanic who has seen the damage and rebuilt several 1970's Porsche engines because the owner used the wrong oil for the season. You might have to go to Weinmeister's on Camino Del Monte Rey or you could call the Porsche dealer in Albuquerque. Leverage the experience of others, it's usually free. Good Luck, Mark

Unless you are driving a Ford in Alaska, you don't need 10/30. The young guys at parts counters seem to have been trained to guide people to 10/30. They are wrong for cars such as Porsche and many other cars too.
Edit: The same guys try to steer you to Fram filters as well usually ![]()

If you have some 20w50 Brad Penn still, just do a 50/50 blend with it. You'll net a 15w40, which should be good for down to 10F, no problem.

that sounds like a good plan.
I don't have any 20-50 on hand, but I'll see if I can exchange half the case of 10-30 for 20-50. Thanks for your input.

Ok, so, similar situation, I just bought some 20w50 today for an oil change shortly. It's getting down into the 40's lately, and will only get colder here through the winter. Do I really need one type of oil for the summer and one type for the winter?????
