1987 911 Carrera Targa G50 transmission Leak
1987 911 Carrera Targa with a G50 transmission: The seal on the transmission is leaking lube from the shifting rod (see pic). What does this rod actually control? Does the transmission have to be taken out to replace this seal? Are there special tools to remove and install this seal? Should I drain the transmission lube first? I just changed the transmission lube with Swepco 201 less than 1000 miles ago, can I put the transmission lube back in the transmission and should the fluid be filtered before putting it back in the transmission. Is it best to put new transmission lube into the transmission and what brand is recommended?
Thank you, Chris ![]() |

That rod does not control anything internal to the gearbox. It is a pivot point for the accelerator cable on its way to the engine.

Similar to what yelcab1 said, that is a pivot point and I don’t think there is a seal there. The side fill plug is near/above and uses a crush washer to seal, that may be it.

Did you use a new washer when you changed the fluid?

That rod threads (I'm fairly certain as my brother just did this on his G50/50) in and you can thread out, add some pipe tape and put back in and it should address the issue. His was leaking also.

Regardless of the fix, I would drain it. 201 is not what should be in a G50. Here are some recommendations: G 50 trans fluid

I had the exact same leak on my '87. It was pointed out to me by a very seasoned Porsche mechanic at the dealer that some of the G50 cases endeded up having the threaded hole go through to the case at the factory. Most did not, but he had seen quite few develop a leak. The stud is just for the throttle linkage.
The suggestion to remove the stud, clean all the threads, and apply some type of sealing compound to the threads is spot on. You will lose some fluid, but it is a good time to replace your fluid because the gear oil will seep out of that opening for a while which will make it very difficult to properly clean it in order to apply a sealant. My mechanic used one of the Dirko products for gear oil and it worked great. |

Surprised to learn some of the holes go thru into the case.

Mobile one ptx works best in my g50 by far. Good luck sealing this leak up.
