recommended oil cooler kit

Dear Pelicans,

I am going to put a 3.2 engine in my 1977 911s in the near future.
The car has no oil cooler (from factory).

I understand that an installation of an external oil cooler is very much recommended. Will appreciate your thoughts / recommendation regarding an external oil cooler kit that will be the best deal for me and for my car.
The car is being built as an RSR (IROC)replica so it will have a front bumper with the necessary opening.

Is a front oil cooler the best way to go or should i use a fender mounted carrera like oil cooler?

Please consider that I intend to install an A/C system in my car in the future.

Thank.

I have the fender mounted cooler and fan, and it keeps up with the heat of Vegas...unlike it's owner.

Part of your problem is where the car is located; shipping the long brass lines to you may be cost prohibitive. You may want to consider using soft lines from the engine to the front, incorporating a thermostat of course. Since you are running a center opening iroc style front bumper, that will be the best position for efficient cooling. A 50 or 60 row cooler will fit well there. 72 row coolers would require modification of the front trunk panel ala RSR or similar

I have just installed a Elephant racing oil cooler in my 901 with stainless lines. By the time I purchased all the bits and peices ended up costing approximately $400 less than the fixed line option. Not a huge saving

as i indicated, since he lives in israel, shipping MAY be prohibitive when sending the long oil lines all that distance. Hence the recommendation to use flexible hose instead- it packs into a much smaller box

oil cooler

Thank you guts for the answerers.

TRE - can you recommend a source for the flexible hose? Can they replace the original plumbing? Is there a complete kit with all necessary parts? Can you offer one?

I have the stock fender cooler in my '87 3.2 and it needs some help to keep the car cool. At track days, I get near 250F. With the IROC front bumper, I get no air to my oil cooler and even turning the fan on (manually) doesn't help. One of my projects this winter is to install a front cooler to take advantage of the opening in the IROC front bumper

Maybe you can find a set of hard lines and maybe even a cooler from a wrecked Carrera locally.

The copper lines are themselves provide additional cooling that hoses will not.

IMHO, The packaged oil cooler kits use the minimum AN-12 size hoses to manage their purchase cost at your engines future expense. For optimal heat transfer large size hose like AN-20 enhance system flow and keep the system pressure rise @ a minimum. Find yourself a good hose fabricator and purchase the hoses yourself. Buy a oil cooler with the big fittings and your engine will thank you in the long run(s) .

Put the cooler in the bumper. Fender coolers do not work, not enough air circulation, you need air to move the heat out of the cooler.
As an example, we had a track day last week, Porsches with fender mounted coolers were having high temps in very few laps, bumper mounted coolers did not have any high temp problems.
