Any one done a HID Xenon Conversion??

Any one done a HID Xenon Conversion on thier 911??

If so, the usually questions what is the best one and how much etc...

their is a kit on ebay PORSCHE 911, 964 71-98 HID Xenon Conversion KIT lights - eBay Bulbs Lenses, Lights Lighting Accessories, Car Tuning Styling, Vehicle Parts Accessories. (end time 09-Nov-09 01:29:29 AEDST)

Most kits just give you low beams no high, check your local laws about that. There are some bi-filament lamps out there and there are motor operated units like the stock ones but way expensive. H-4's are the way to go.

James Brown 10-11-2009 12:13 PM

Just checked out the ebay site. yes they are bi-fillament. that should work and look cool also!

i would not buy that kit on ebay. just putting in a hid system is pointless unless you have the proper housings. without projectors you will just be blinding everyone on the road at night.

x2

If you're just going for "the look", just buy some blue H4s. And they'll give you better lighting to actually see down the road.

matty74 10-11-2009 08:42 PM

I think that kit comes with the housing

Canada Kev 10-11-2009 10:28 PM

The arc light source in an HID headlamp is fundamentally different in size, shape, orientation, and luminosity distribution compared to the filament light source used in halogen headlamps. For that reason, HID-specific optics are used to collect and distribute the light. HID bulbs cannot effectively or safely be installed in optics designed to take filament bulbs; doing so results in improperly-focused beam patterns and excessive glare, and is therefore illegal in almost all countries.

What he ^ said! Don't buy this kit. It will serve to reinforce the publics opinion that Porsche owners are selfish idiots. Really, the kit is junk.

trust me they do not. A quality hid housing can run well over $200 alone, and that is not even the entire headlight assembly.

What they said...and I'll add that an acquaintance has a set on an SC that the PO had intalled. Neither he or the prior owner (I haven't seen the car) where able to find the wiring short that must have occurred during installation, battery is drained everytime he wants to use the car. He says it gets old charging the battery everytime he wants to use the car....keep it simple and use the H4's.

I tried a set of HIDs in an old Audi I had. It was terrible. Yes, the quantity of light was greater, but the beam pattern was horrible, and blinded oncoming traffic. I took it out pretty soon after I installed it. I am seeing more and more of these conversion on the road, and every time I see them I cringe. They "dazzle" and you can see them from a mile away, blinding traffic on the way.

Unless you're going to use projectors, or a housing that is designed for HID's, I wouldn't do it.

I have a set of ****** ones from Europe with the high and low beam installed in my H4s the beam is great though I still over drive them, (my car gets to sixty in a hurry and 150mph comes up really fast in 4th gear) H4s with 80/100 low/high is definitely far more annoying to oncoming drivers. For what it is worth, I paid around $500 for the kit from Imagine Auto at the time Stephen got it, plus installation with a shielded wiring harness and heat shruk connections. I would do it again and I consider it to be a great mod for car as low as mine with lowered seat rails to fit my 6'2" frame with a helmet.

Further, there are threads here where people have done legitimate conversions. I put a set of Audi bi xenon projectors in with lenses from the early bugs in my early 911. It's awesome. Super sharp cutoff, great light temperature, awesome visibility, much less power drain. It eliminates the need to redo the switch/relays thing.
That said, there was some less than plug and play fabrication involved.

If you're going to go HID, do it right.

Now that's doing it right! Any pictures of that conversion?

I did on my 96 993 and posted a pretty comprehensive how-to install on Rennlist about 5 years ago. I dont know if they will fit your headlights though. There are a few threads here on different approaches. Some people have transplanted Mini Cooper headlights.

I really like the headlamp on the second car above.

zippy_gg 10-12-2009 12:25 PM

I have upgraded the halogen headlight to HID on my last 3 motorcycles without ill effect, except for the greatly improved lighting. None of the bike had a projector, but the capsules were mounted correctly, meaning the light source was in the same exact spot as the halogen they replaced, so there was no bleeding or blinding of oncoming traffic.
After taking my 86 cab to Mulholland after dark... Oh crap! I can't see where I am going!!! So HID is in the future for my car.

David 10-12-2009 03:48 PM

All OE Xenon headlight cars I've seen adjust by suspension travel to reduce blinding other drivers. Just say'n.

Canada Kev 10-12-2009 04:00 PM

In Europe, it is MANDATORY to have auto headlight adjusters to avoid glare for oncoming drivers.
