Targa Tops

Poor fitment Issues

I have been finding more miss-matched tops than ever before on 911. People are taking arms from roller latch tops and sticking them o hook latch frames, taking arm from early 67-68 tops and put them on 70-85 frames. None of these fits work leading frame breaking and or to poor fits and leaks.

Second reason for poor fitment is the wrong over the top of windshield seal. Proper one has not been made by Porsche since 1995 and this to leads to top and latch breaking. Since discovering this situation I have gotten the correct size seal made, and it fits.

If you need a fitment year listing or more seal info please contact me.
Dan

I have to agree and endorse the front over the windshield seal from Dan, top sits much better.

The only thing is most likely than not if yours had a improper seal, P/O or mechaninc probably messed with the quarter window and door windows and put them out of alignment like mine.

I had to re-align mine

Improper T T seal

This seal problem started by discontinuing the proper seals in 1995 and going to the 964 seal for all Targas. This was one of the worst decisions ever made by Porsche. They then compounded the problem by sticking a part number on the bag which was correct but what in the bag was a 964 too big seal.

Many a local shop got hurt by this with having to warranty a problem they wasn't theirs. Then shopshad to spend countless hours trying to adjust the windows etc. I was lucky enough because of my Targa top restoration business to here it from all side owner, shops and Dealers. I at the time had one correct red label seal and when I compared it to what was in the new part bag, with the correct number, it was plain to see. The new seal was 20% to big.

I had proved what many, who were installing seal knew, there was something different about the new seals. They were too big and made the top sit up 3/8".

Now the bad news. Many people are still selling and many shops are still installing the wrong seal. There is only one correct seal and it is not Dealer sold and it is not after market OEM version. It is my seal that was reproduced.

Sorry for being long winded.

What is different about the seal size? Does it raise the top too much?

Curious about the window alignment.... How was this done? By adjusting the retainer that resides inside the door at the bottom of the front track?

Tx,
Scott

Window frame is slotted which allows for adjustment.

Dan,

Is there any easy way for people to identify the two different seals, to know which one that they have? I know the top will sit higher on a car with the 964 seal but are there any identifying characteristics of the seals themselves?

Believe it or not, the factory manual even suggest widening the slots if needed to make needed adjustments. I have to assume to compensate for accidents or body flex?
