That's the simplest question that you could ask on this site, with the most complex answer. Particularly since nobody has any idea what 911, in what state of tune, for what purpose, including what kind of oil has been in the car previously, that you're talking about.

'85 Targa I'm assuming, casual and occasional everyday driving, nothing stressful, just puttin' around? You could almost say "Any good, modern oil above lawnmower-grade." 30-weight's sort of thin for an air-cooled engine, though.

Protechnik here in Houston (The premier Porsche shop here and the largest in the Southwest) uses Royal Purple and Mobil 1 for syn and Valvoline for Dino. Two other well regarded shops (EuroCarWerk and European Auto Technik) both use Mobil 1 for Syn. Eurocarwerk uses Castrol for Dino. Lots of opinions. But these three shops probably control 75% of the enthusiast market here in Houston. There are lots of threads on this including the ultimate oil thread.

Where in SC are you located?
There are quite a few of us in the upstate.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 20-50 racing oil. They don't make it any more, and I'm on my last case now. When it is gone, I will use their Dominator 15-50 Racing oil. Both are 100% PAO synthetic with good zddp content.

I suspect the reason you're getting so few responses is that everybody is tired of dealing with this question. Do a search and you'll find every kind of advice from using super-rare racing oils to "Mobile 1,"as most people seem to spell it, like it's a cellphone. As I said earlier, the bottom line for a standard, ordinary, conventionally driven 911 is "any good oil," though there are people who will insist that your car will self-destruct unless you use 13 quarts of $30-a-bottle hyperbrew and change it every 1,000 miles.

But do go with a 50-weight, not 30.

I use Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil, 20w-50. I have been pretty happy with it and it's not that expensive, around $5 a quart (it's Mineral). It also has ZDDP and Ashless additives for better protection.

Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils

That should keep you busy for a while. Harry's first post has a good summary of what's been determined "acceptable"

VR1 Valvoline is a fine oil to use. multi viscosity 30 weights are not. HTHS spec needs to be higher than 3.5...Very few 10w30's are going to meet that spec. run a good xxw40 or xxw50 in the air cooled 911's.
