Charging light - then 17.7 volts

After countless hours of reading up on all the past problems with charging systems I've decided to post:

Background:
All my problems started when I was forced to use my porsche to jump start my wife's acura. Since then I've experienced glowing alt light that would dim with throttle and occasionally a bouncing tack could be seen. Removed alternator and had a shop rebuild it. Reinstalled and now the light resets with a blip of throttle and charges sporadically. After reading on here more recently my problem sounded like a faulty voltage regulator (external). Replaced voltage regulator (911 603 206 13) and now the car is charging at 17.7 volts and the alt light is on when the ignition key is in the off position. When you turn the key to on position the light stays on - turn key to start (car starts) - light goes off like it should. Whats going on there!

My question:
Is my problem the alternator? Should I switch over to an internal alternator or buy a rebuilt external unit? Are there any advantages to the newer internal regulated alternators? It seems like there are mixed feelings about this. I've updated many things on this car so I'm not concerned with the stock idea. I just want the best for the car.

I've recently relocated and the car is 7 hours away taking space in the in laws garage so I would really like to get to the bottom of this problem. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the length.

bad diode(s) in the alternator if the light is on with the key off. you tried your best but it died. try a later '83 style alt with the internal regulator. remove the other regulator when you do it and don't use the black wire that used to go to the brush pack when you wire up the new alternator.

Thanks guys for the replies! I removed/reinstalled the alternator myself so they didn't have the car to check the regulator.

Is there any real advantage to the later internal regulated alternators? During my reading on here there seems to be mixed feelings. My porsche budget is limited so installing an external rebuilt is the way I'm leaning unless I see a real advantage to the external.

Thanks
