Elephant Oil cooler mounting on a SWB

Hello again

I'm mounting an elephant racing cooler with factory brackets for my 3.2 912 in the front wheel well.

I have only an approximate idea as to where the brackets are supposed to be mounted.... Can't see a lot in Wayne's book

For those in the know:
  • Can I simply drill a hole in the headlight bucket for the top buffer (rather than use the top mount)?
  • For the bottom mount, can I use a M8 screw to secure it to the body or does it need to be welded on?

Cheers and thanks as always to those that respond.

Roland

When I mounted my Elephant cooler in my '72 and a Carrera cooler in my son's '68, I just drilled a hole in the back of the bucket for the top mount and bolted the bottom mount to the tub. On both of them. So, answers to your questions are "yes" and "yes".

Ditto with my 75S and 73.5T, with slight variation.

I was thinking of simply screwing the bottom bracket into the body rather than welding it? Any thoughts?

I read that this bracket is suppost to screw into the rear of the headlight bucket? I guess it just seems a little strange given the fact that the bracket is on an angle and it is flat. I was thinking of simply removing it and just screwing the rubber buffer directly into the bucket?

I believe the bracket is angled because on newer cars, the rear of the headlight bucket is angled away from each side of the midline (when looking at it from the wheel well side)--it is not round as you'd suspect. Your 912 may have a different shape bucket but, regardless, if you test fit the top bracket of the cooler and locate the proximity of the rubber mount, you can either eliminate the bracket (if the mount stud is long enough) or fab a simple angle bracket and mount it to the bucket with a bolt.

Yes decided to elimiate the bracket . This has worked well. Do you think I need to weld the bottom bracket or do you think a bolt through the hole will surfice?

Cheers

Depending on the cooler length. I have seen photos of the bracket welded to the car and the bottom of the bracket is below the bottom level of the tub, leaving little of the bracket to secure to the tub so welding makes sense. From the pics I saw, there would be room for maybe one bolt through the side of the tub--that would hold the bracket, I'm sure, but may allow for movement since there was only one securing point. If you test fit the cooler and find there is enough room to bolt it to the side of the tub and you are comfortable that the bracket/cooler is stable, then that should be secure enough, IMO.
