Engine bay wire questions!

Hey all!

Put my rebuilt engine (1970) back in to my redone roller (1971). Everything is falling right in to place, but I have some wires that I have no idea where their home is!

1. A three prong plug attached to the engine bay electrical system. What plugs in here?

2. The ground wire from the harness that ends up near the distributor. Can I just ground it to the cam cover?

3. Two wires coming off the engine wire harness, heading toward the engine bay electrical system.

4. Oil tank wires. Both wires fit on both terminals... does it matter which goes where?

5. The darn STARTER... I put the starter back on, and had two wires from the harness plug right in. However, now once the thing is in the car, there is a wire (big red) from the front of the car... does this attach to the SAME post as the big red one that came from the engine?

6. Toggle switch on dash. Is this for the power mirrors?? I don't even want power mirrors.

Thanks so much guys (and gals). You have no idea how much I appreciate it!
Bill

First plug is for your rear window defrost.

Any available ground point should suffice for that shielded cable.

#3 not sure on that one.

I think your oil tank level wires can go to either connection (looks like one is hot and one is ground), but I would want to verify in the wiring diagram first.

Toggle switch on the dash is aftermarket. Remove and toss.

Thanks Scott! So there should be wires coming down from the rear window somewhere in there...

I think the power mirrors are aftermarket on this car (1971), and there are wires attached to it. I will back track them, and see where they go.

Just need to figure out the starter now... I have TWO big wires, and ONE small wire all ending there... and only two posts!

Thanks again Scott!

#3 looks like it is two grey wires with a red stripe. If this is the case then they go to the microswitch that goes to the speed switch. BTW, the 1971 T wiring diagram is on the pelican website http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1971_Part-2.jpg

The the black and red wires connect to terminal 30 on the starter via bolt on ring connections. The Yellow wire IIRC is a female spade connector that fits on terminal 50 of the starter.

The brown wire for the oil level sender connects to a male spade connector which is on one of the mounting studs for the sender. The Green wire attached to the insulated terminal located in the middle portion of the sender.

FC- Since I removed that acceleration circuit from my carbs, do I even have a microswitch? If not, can I just cut these short and plug them off?

Noticed that the E and S models are the ones with a micro switch, so a no go on my T.

And BOTH big wires go to the SAME terminal then on the starter, right? I figured, since there was no other place for it!

Schematic is VERY helpful. THANK YOU!!

Thanks again all!

Yes - the big wire from the + battery goes directly to the starter. Then there is another big wire that goes to the alternator. They are both attached to the starter at the same terminal.

Since the car had been modified you should not need the wires. I would not cut them off though. Just fold them back and tape them up with electrical tape to hide them. Who knows, yourself or someone else may want to restore the car in the future and they will thank you for not cutting up the wiring harness.

It is true that the E and the S had a microswitch for the MFI system but, the '71 T had one too. You can see it in the wiring Diagram along with the two components that it attached to.

Glad that the diagram helps. Thank Wayne...he is to one who makes it available.
