I have an '81 911 Targa. I also have an on again off again clicking noise coming from the rear of the car. I have put the car up on stands and run the engine to try and re-create this sound - nothing. After I took the car down the sound disappeared for a while. It's back. It seems to only make the sound when the transmission is engaged. I cannot make it make the noise when the clutch is pressed in. Should I rule out the CV joints? Could this be a serious problem with my transmission. I have a brand new clutch. This noise was not going on at the time of the clutch replacement, but was present before AND after the clutch was replaced. Any suggestions are more than appreciated.

Could be a CV joint. Do you hear it more when cornering. Try a slow, quiet turn and see if the noise increases when turning. If so, look at the CV joints.
